Summary Of A Counselor Interview
The interview I conducted took place during the evening hours on a Thursday night. I was very grateful for the opportunity, as not only did I learn helpful information, but I also met with the counselor after a busy day for her. I asked her questions that included her experiences as a substance abuse counselor, what she believes are the most important qualities are as a substance abuse counselor are, what she enjoys the most about the group counseling she offers, and suggestions on how to become an effective substance abuse group counselor. The interview took about 45 minutes to conduct, and I made sure to thank her for the interview both before and after it took place. I believe I made an excellent connection with her and that she will be a great person to turn to when I am counseling individuals or groups on the issue of substance abuse.

She stated that the hardest thing for her to do is to not become friends with many of the clients who come in, and to stay within the counselor role with them. She said that she has a deep level of empathy for her clients, and that many of the clients are truly good people who are just trying to break a habit. She said that she deals with this dilemma by following the person-centered approach and not taking over the sessions which allows her to stay within the facilitator role and not as a person who the clients solely rely on for their change. She has had moments where she has been at places such as the mall when she sees a client who tries to have a long friendly chit-chat with her, and she manages to escape the chit-chat by telling the person that she has a busy day and that she will see them in the next session. This keeps the client coming back to the session by feeling welcomed by her, while the counselor manages not to be pulled into friendly chit-chat, which would be a violation of

She immediately replied, “Through empathy.” She explained that group therapy is first and foremost a spiritual and intuitive experience for all involved. A facilitator is responsible TO the group, not FOR the group. It boils down to treating clients the way she wants to be treated. Bad choices should, of course, be pointed out. However, if a client consciously chooses to make bad choices the counselor should still demonstrate support, acceptance, and love. This is what it means to have a therapeutic alliance based on trust and loyalty. My personal philosophy of counseling begins and ends with patience’s and acceptances. One goal that I have is to enter into a client’s experience beside them being there with them every step of the way to help the client explore their own thoughts and feelings. I entered into the field of counseling because I have a compassion and desire to help people reach and understand their full potential. As a counselor in training, I desire to help a client identify their own problems and concerns while also demonstrating a genuine compassion for the endeavors that they may face. I believe that counseling is a crosswalk for empowerment, self-exploration, healing and growth. Ultimately, I would strive to encourage the client to delineate their own solutions. Overall, my philosophy as a counselor in training is to respect and treat each client the way that they should be treated, providing them with respect, courtesy and acceptance no matter their personal circumstance.…

Preparing for my day as professional mental health counselor takes time. When I am leaving work at the end of a busy day, I always take the time to look at my schedule for the next day. The first thing I do to prepare for my job the next day is to look at my schedule to see with whom I will be meeting with, and the time schedule for my first and last appointment. I familiarize myself with the clients I will be working with, and pull each clients file to refresh myself on our last session. This is necessary for me to prepare for the appointment. It is important for me to be prepared and show my client that I am in tune to what is going on with them. I used to do all this first thing in the morning but I have found that it works better for me if I do it at the end of my day. My being prepared helps me to give the client my full attention and helps the client to gain confidence in my abilities. It helps personalize the session between me, as the counselor, and them as the client.…

counselor. For all of us, it is a lifelong process” (Journal of counseling and development, 2006 p. 116. Vol. 84). When thinking about the characteristics of a counselor, I think about the qualities I would seek in a person that I would like to have as a friend or confidant: Patience, empathy, a good listener; conversely, well versed and skilled in their area of expertise, life experience and ethics/values. Counselors work closely and intimately with individuals and have to maintain appropriate boundaries while balancing the ability to establish trust and empathy. “ An effective counselor is one who works with clients to produce a positive outcome, a positive change in the…

They were very welcoming and friendly. When the meeting started a man starting talking about his addiction, how it was ruining his life, and everything he went through to work towards sobriety. He told the group that his last drink was 9 years ago. He was very inspirational and told everyone in the meeting that we are all equals, we do not judge anyone, and to not be ashamed of who you are. I felt like he made everyone that was listening become very comfortable. He told everyone that we are all going through the same thing and we are here to support each other. He was also referring to that we have to believe in a higher power to end this addiction and focused it around the 12-steps. He spoke for about 20 minutes, then we came together as a group. In the group, every person went around and introduced themselves if they were comfortable with doing so. They would talk about their addiction, problems, cravings they have, etc. It was very interactive, everyone would participate and give feedback and input to each…

The life of a counselor is spent by talking with and listening to people. The main point of the counselors’ job is to interact with their patients and advise them on personal, family, educational, mental health and career problems they might be experiencing. Generally, counselors specialize in a specific field, such as; school counselors; rehabilitation counselors; mental health counselors; substance and behavioral disorder counselors; and marriage and family counselors. One important thing a counselor needs to have is active listening skills. In reviewing my practice counseling interviews, and the written feedback I received from my colleagues I was able to see my strengths and weaknesses. Behavioral research studies done over the past 40 years have isolated three key characteristics of feedback. They are classified as specificity, empathy, and inquiry. These three elements represent key feedback skills so trainers can teach and assess effectively. (Lawrence, 1995).…

At the beginning of the session I introduced myself by first name to the client before outlining the counselling contract with her. I felt it was important for the client to know that I am a student member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy because it provides a framework of good practice when working with clients. Agreeing the contract allowed for client autonomy too. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy suggests that autonomy is respect for the client's rights to be self-governing. (2011, p.2 ) I mentioned I would be working with her in a Person-Centred way which meant that the client would not be led by me, we would be working in her way and that it was her space to talk about what was causing her concerns, and in her own time.…

There are three major objectives of the therapist, congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathic understanding. Congruence is referring to the inner combination and the wholeness of the counselor (Brodley, 2006). Congruence compels counselors to engage in individual’s own processes and behaviors that will continue to keep the integration of their self. Brodley (2006) stated it is essential to the client’s view of the counselor as authentic and real in communicating empathy understanding and unconditional positive regard. Unconditional positive regard is referring to the counselor’s acceptance, nonjudgmental caring or unreserved approval of the client (Brodley, 2006). It encompasses the counselor in an open-minded acceptance of clients, whatever clients are directly sharing about their own feelings, thoughts or actions (Brodely, 2006). Unconditional positive regard involves taking the person who is not regarding their thoughts or actions, and it contains caring for the client regardless of the client’s variances from the therapist (Rogers, 2015). This approach is expressed in the counselor's presence as personal warmth. “Unconditional positive regard is not communicated explicitly; it is primarily implied by the absence of directions, interventions, and confrontations” stated Brodley in 2006. The client-centered counselor must grow an…
