Summary Of Chapter 2 Of The Great Gatsby
1. Chapter 2 begins with a description of the valley of ashes, and a forsaken formerly developed land that marks the intersection of the city with the suburbs. The area is home to a decaying billboard that depicts the advertisement of the Eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, which are described as blue and very big.

2. Tom takes Nick into the city and on the way there stops off at her husband's garage to meet her. They then go into the city and have a party at the apartment Tom rents for Myrtle.

3. Myrtle seems vivacious. She walks down the stairs, and she is full of life and makes eye contact with Tom. She was clearly awaiting his arrival and is trying to impress him by being sexual.

4. George has blond hair and light blue eyes. He is powerless and spiritless, and not too handsome. He's hopeful for something that Tom may bring, which I believe is the car that Tom was going to sell him.

Fitzgerald describes this setting very detailed and poetic. He describes it as being full of ashes, strange gardens, and smoke; full of people more like ghosts than men. He focuses very well in the details of this area which is just a setting but plays a larger roll later

“I’ll go find another bottle of whiskey, shall I?” she asked Tom in a loud, dramatic tone that was rewarded by murmurs of appreciation from the group. Tom merely glanced at her and grunted before turning back to the subject of Mr McKee’s photography, wearing his ever-present bored expression. Without hesitation Myrtle spun with a rustle from her cream, chiffon dress, deliberately brushing the edges of her skirts against Mrs McKee as she exited the group. Her dress was more expensive than Mrs McKee’s, she thought smugly, and her good friend knew it.…

The Jazz Age was depicted as an era of freedom, revolution, fantasy, and mostly, corruption. The inhabitants of America during the time were jubilant over the victories of World War I and very much enjoyed the wealth brought on by the spoils of war. Many were busy as they tried to build big businesses to monopolize the flow of money, and legalities did not matter as long as the people got what they wanted. The people sought to use the new-gained wealth to make their fantasy ideals to become a reality and the “American Dream” was the popular phrase used to describe their mindsets. Gatsby is longing to reunite with his love, and he spends a fortune to have it all setup and does not even stop at the face of her husband. To put the novel into a sum, the people of the Jazz Age flare up their monotonous life with corrupted love and the most unethical society and class hierarchy built on the flow of money.…

    Valley Of Ashes Symbolism

    • 2 Pages

The location of the Valley of Ashes shows the waste that comes from the American lifestyle and the death of the American Dream. When traveling from East and West Egg to New York City, the characters journey through the gloomy place of the Valley of Ashes, “an area swampland that is being filled with refuse”(Baker). The Valley of Ashes is a dark, dirty place between the sparkling East and West Eggs. The valley symbolizes darkness and death: the horror that comes after the expensiveness of the American Dream. The valley is full of the waste from the Eggs, showing how the glitz and glamour of the American Dream will lead to dark times, and for some, even death. A main character that lives in the Valley of Ashes is George Wilson, “a defeated man” who has “seen his version of the American Dream become like heaps that encroach on…
