“…Anorexia and Bulimia, you know them well… /But Obesity’s a beast, you see, and you should not expel / It from your list. This is my wish: that you take heed, read what I've said. / Maybe understanding’s the cure to stop fatties like me from ending up dead.” (55-58) When people are about to take the first bite of a meal, the nutritional value probably isn't the immediate thing they think about.
They don't pounder its contents, the process it went through, or how it came to be on the plate in front of them. But most of all they don't think of the long term effects the food choices they make can have on their health and the world around them. Times have changed, the urge to live so fast paced is even involved in our diets, convenience foods make up a large portion of our country’s appetite. Our food system allows us to eat junk food at a low cost, but the lack of nutrition is costing us more in the end. Children obesity rates have certainly gone up and while most people don't want to be like the person in the poem, people tend to indulge in these salty, sugary snacks that lack vitamins, protein, nutrients and fiber. You can pay a cheap price for a happy meal but what is that really doing to your body and is it worth it? In today’s culture, Americans need to stop relying on food from the Industrial food system because it causes diseases, harms the environment and lacks nutritional
value.
