Summary Of For Environmental Balance Pick Up A Rifle
A story published December 4, 2005 by The New York Times, columnist, Nicholas D. Kristof called “For Environmental Balance, Pick Up a Rifle”. It is a piece about the destruction that an unchecked deer population is causing in North America, but seem to focus more data from New Jersey and New York. The article talks about wasted money, death to humans, other events, and even compares the likely hood of being killed by Bambi (Disney movie about a deer) instead of Osama Bin Laden (terrorist) who was alive at the time of this original running of this piece. All of this to try and show the importance of hunting and how it helps maintain a needed balance of the ecological balance. So pick up a rifle.
I can see the truth to this article because it is simple logic. Do you have to eat to live? Yes, you will die if you don’t. Do you have to

I live the outdoors and like to shoot guns, but never took up hunting, but have went with my friends on their hunts. They were granted access to farmers who had crops of vegetables and other plants. They happily welcomed my friend’s to hunt on their land, with one request. If you see any pigs running wild, please shot them. See wild pigs will bread and develop into large populations that will just continue to grow in size if not kept in check. These pigs are eating from the crops, stampeding through the crops killing it and that will lead to erosion to the land because they are killing the ground vegetation. So not hunting maintaining a balance of life of an animal leads to destruction of farm land at a minimum. So even if you don’t eat meat, this event of overpopulation of deer or other animals is effecting the foods you do eat. Think of it another way, if you have less of something because of what ever reason. Then that product will go up in cost, you will have to pay more. There are many reasons why hunting is needed to help control our eco

In "Is Hunting Ethical?" Ann Causey examines the growing debate on the morality of hunting. She started off with an example of the controversy by using herself as the model. While telling the story of the tragic loss of Sandy the fawn, she reveals to us the irony of her eating venison that very night. This gives us early signs that Ann is not on either side and that she is feeling conflicted over the subject like many people in the present day do.…

That question has been very intelligently addressed in Ted Kerasote 's book called Bloodties. He makes a big a point in his introduction to the book that as long as we hunt locally (so that we don 't burn fossil fuel getting to our quarry) and as long as we eat the victim, we do infinitely less harm to the overall environment than we do by eating ordinary supermarket vegetables. After all, the vegetables are grown by an energy-hungry agribusiness whose pesticides decimate the ecosystem and whose combines fatally batter hundreds of small animals (insects, toads, snakes, ground-nesting birds, mice, voles, woodchucks, striped squirrels, weasels, skunks, foxes) in the course of each harvest. But venison is in dramatic contrast to the vegetables resulting from that harvest, as well as to feed-dependent pork, beef, mutton, chicken and turkey. Unlike agricultural produce, venison requires no pesticide or fossil-fuel to grow, and results in the loss of just one life: the deer 's.9 Why don 't we all see this? Because to many of us, the little animals in the crops are vermin and the deer are Bambi, yet as Kerasote points out, life is precious to all creatures. This point that he makes shows us how deep this animal harm goes, people who are vegans probably do not think this deep. The land cleared for their food was once a home to animals. That same land is annually inhabited by other animals and every year they get killed or chased away by machinery. Kerasote hunts, probably very well. As a hunter he sounds more like an Inuit or a Bushman (or more like a wolf or a mountain lion, to name two other hunters of the deer) than like the camouflage-clad, beer-sodden macho types with automatic weapons who infest the woods each fall. And because he 's a hunter, Kerasote 's descriptions of hunts are realistic…

You’re driving home from a movie with your best friends and you’re doing about 60 on a country road you’ve known all your life. All of a sudden, out of your peripheral view, you see a couple of deer heading straight for your cars path. You hit the brake to try to avoid them and narrowly miss. You think to yourself how lucky you are that you didn’t hit one. What you didn’t know is the couple of deer you saw used to be a pack of 4 deer. A week earlier, two different hunters each took a deer from that herd. If it wasn’t for the hunters, you probably would’ve hit at least one deer. Deer hunting isn’t as bad as it is portrayed to be! Hunting controls the deer population and along with predator population and the number of accidents involving deer decrease because of good ethical hunting.…

Many animals endure prolonged, painful deaths when they are injured but not killed by hunters. What the author fails to consider is that most people that hunt are not hunting to just kill most are trying to feed there family or put meat in there fridge. According to peta the delicate balance of ecosystems ensures their survival if they are left unaltered. Natural predators help maintain this balance by killing only the sickest and weakest individuals. Hunters, however, kill any animal whose head they would like to hang over the fireplace including large, healthy animals who are needed to keep the population strong. Although this may be true the ecosystem is going to kill off populations a lot slower than kill animals such as deer are self, killing isn't bad if you using the deer for good causes. On private lands that are set up as for-profit hunting reserves or game ranches, hunters can pay to kill native and exotic species in “canned hunts.” This is true, but people that go out and hunt in canned hunts usually after they kill a deer they give the meat to share your harvest and help families in need.…

Keeping the population balanced by hunting really only counts for some animals such as deer. If we didn't hunt deer there would be too many and eventually they would starve to death. However, lion hunting is entirely different. There are only about 30,000 lions left which is means they are endangered. If a hunter kills a male lion that is a leader of the pack, the rest of the lions are open for the kill of other animals which leads to more deaths of lions, which brings the number of their population down and can eventually lead to extinction.…

Animal agriculture is ruining our planet. Scientists say that animal agriculture is responsible for more than 18 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions, which is more than the combined exhaust gases from all transportation in the world. Therefore, this means that riding your bike, walking or taking the bus will not help if you want to be kind to our earth. Although I do understand that some people might enjoy eating meat and that they might not feel complete without it the consequences of it has no mercy.…
