As somebody who has gone through struggles herself, Jody B. Miller’s book is inspiring and realistic as one can relate to the real life stories of the people in this book. This book was written at a time when there is much struggle and pain in the world; ranging from violence, abuse, depression, trauma (emotional and physical), etc.
This book will make you question your reality and will make you want to do better in life. …show more content…
In the first section of the book, the author talks about the reasons why we change, evolve or shift. Some of these reasons are, depression, near death experiences, childhood trauma or abuse, etc.
The second section throws more light on when to shift; by not allowing external influences or occurrences make us become less than what we are meant to be.
We tend to shift when a new incident occurs in our lives, for example, surviving life threatening experiences, when someone who motivates us comes into our lives, when we are in pursuit of real happiness or spirituality, etc. This tends to make us become better people, for ourselves, family and friends, and the world at large.
The third section explains how to shift or the processes of shifting, by being persistent and strong willed. The real life stories and experiences of the characters in this book will help you understand the processes involved in shifting, and how it may relate to you. During the process of shifting, the author indicates that we may have to overcome obstacles, have an unwavering strong faith in ourselves and whatever we may believe in, and also to explore other ideas presented to us in that moment.
The latter chapters of this book talks about the ‘After the Shift’ moment, it shows that one has to remain positive in life, build stronger and closer relationships, and focus on solutions instead of problems. This book will teach you to be more human, the realities of karma, being selfless and helping people around you in any way you
can.
The appendices of this book have some extra information on things like Hinduism, Buddhism, and advices on how to handle some issues in one's life.
It is difficult not to like the author with her unpretentious honest style of writing; revealing her own weaknesses too. It goes a long way to show that she knows what she is really talking about and this is what I like most about this book. But, on the other hand I think the author should have broadened her horizon to reach more cultures and people, for example, interviewing people from third world countries and telling their stories of successes and shifts, would relate more to people coming from such geographical regions. I believe this would enhance the acceptance of this book globally.
Generally this is a good book which I would recommend for everybody, especially adults going through difficult phases in their lives; but, young inexperienced people might not really appreciate this book. “I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.” I did not give this book a 4 star rating because, the stories were limited to particular regions, and as such some people may not be able to easily relate to this book. Likewise, I did not give it a 2 star rating because this book was written in a simple and understandable style, and it is above average in relation to other inspirational books I have read.
