Though an extremely new medium, social media has seemed to completely alter the way Americans think, especially among the Millennial generation. It is another perfect example of how our lack of sense and reason has transformed something that was designed to increase our social capabilities into a way to rant, boast, and bully. Instead of using social media to communicate and connect positively, our society has used it to create countless issues and distractions that only deter and detract from developing our social…
Social Media has become so powerful and influential within modern culture and society, that it has the ability to affect people’s lives in all aspects, including both financial and social status. Quite simply, it can either “build you up or break you down”; and only those that knowingly can utilize its services in a skillful manner are the ones able to succeed.…
At this point in time it seems as if though the majority of Millennials, myself included, have mastered the art of digital conversation. “I Had A Nice Time With You Tonight. On The App.”, an editorial written by Jenna Wortham, the author delves into the vast number of social media outlets we’ve grown accustomed to having at our exposal and convenient it is for so many opportunities to communicate lie in the palm of your hand. Although social media and the internet can get out of whack sometimes, I certainly agree with what Wortham has to say about it.…
We’re afraid, because our kids know things we don’t.” (Goldwasser, par. 7). Teenagers have the ability to decide what becomes popular through the use of social media and the internet. They are the main reason why Apple products have become so popular and common; they made movies like “High School Musical” popular. Through their use and time on social media they were able to make the movie “Juno” an Oscar winner, made MySpace worth five hundred and eighty million dollars. Goldwasser stated “Besides, we’re tired of having to ask them every time we need to find Season 2 of “Heroes,” calculate a carbon footprint or upload photos to Facebook.” (Goldwasser, par. 8). A major reason parents think that the internet is melting their kid’s brains is because they just don’t seem to know how to do certain things with the internet without having to ask for help from a teenager. Parents also believe that teenagers are consistently blogging about them. As the author said “teenagers today read and write for fun; its part of their social lives. We need to start celebrating this unprecedented surge, incorporating it as an educational tool instead of meeting it with punishing pop quizzes and suspicion.” (Goldwasser, par. 14). Adults need to be able to start trusting their kids that what they do on the internet is not…

Many technological advances in the modern era has brought up the question whether or not that the current generation of people under thirty years of age should be deemed as the dumbest generation. The sources given lack the evidence needed to support the claim that those under age thirty are "the dumbest generation." The sources that are in favor of this make very logical examples depicting said claim; however, the author fails to support it using facts and statistics. The sources in which the author tries to disprove the claim utilizes facts and statistics from conducted experiments. This ratifies that the evidence given in these sources can deteriorate the original claim, proving that people under thirty are not the dumbest generation.…
In the past decade technology has taken a turn for the better however it is social media that has had a negative impact on everyone's mannerisms especially in Minors. Due to their age Minors are more susceptible to making bad choices and those choices are made based on how many likes or followers they aquire. In today’s modern world, technology has been the most popular and relevant commodity this generation has to offer. We have become equipped and dependent on computers, television, cellphones, and many more devices for entertainment and education. While a mass amount of people see technology as helpful in means of improving education, there are others who see differently. Many people throughout the years have been on the contrary about technology and what is has to offer to this generation. In the social critic Mark Bauerlin’s book, The Dumbest Generation, the title of his work suggest that us people under thirty are “dumbest” generation history has to offer. Technology has not made people under thirty the “dumbest” generation because of increased…
However, the authors inform us that that is not the case. In fact, they state that most teens use social media for good and I believe that that is the most profound point of this chapter (p. 34). Even with cyberbullying being as prevalent as it is today, it is still not the norm, making the take home message from this chapter being that the benefits of social media outweigh the risks. These benefits include things such as giving teens a way to feel connected to their peers, a way to discover who they are as a person and what they believe in, as well as giving them a platform to express themselves that makes them feel as though they are being heard and taken seriously (2015). One quandary that teens experience is a desire to stand out and feel unique, while still desiring to fit in with their peers and feel like they are a part of the crowd; being a part of the smartphone society allows teens to do just that. While this chapter emphasizes how social media benefits teens, the authors surprisingly did not mention any specific instances of these positive experiences that teens have had. Throughout the chapter, they provide 8 different quotes from kids that have experienced the negative effects of social media; however, they did not supply any quotes for positive experiences. In a chapter that focuses on the benefits of a smartphone society, I…
It is fundamental that children and teens be comfortable to who they are, where they belong, lead a happy healthy life. "There is another side to this story, and that is that kids are getting a lot of social support through social media," said Campbell (WebMD). Social media is another way children and teens find what group they belong to, and participate in conversations. As social media can consume time from children and teen, therefore it can have a negative side. But, it also enforces a positive side, it can help build self-confidence. As a result children and teenagers can engage in groups like their favorite music, TV show, groups they may belong to, for example the LGBT group, or even groups who can answer sex question they may not feel…
Over the past 10 years social media has become a part of our everyday live. From MySpace to Instagram just about everyone is only one degree of separation from social media. What was once just a source to stay in touch with long lost friends and family has evolved into a place for marketing, customer and product research, networking, informal learning, and real time interaction with peer’s and colleagues. Initially business only used social media for marketing and an avenue to reach out to their target market. However some organizations have found it essential to utilize this new technology to its full potential. In an article entitled Social Learning authors Matt Allen and Jennifer Naughton have conducted studies done to address how social media can and should be integrated into the business world. Allen and Naughton say’s “Baby Boomers are retiring, and predictions are that by 2014, half of the workforce will be Millennial. They have grown up using technology and expect it to be part of how they work. And, increasing numbers of individuals are adopting it.” (Allen, M., & Naughton, J.2011) Because social media apps are intergraded with just about every piece of technology the millennial generation have become accustom to using it daily.…
It only makes sense that the Me Generation would raise the next generation of narcissists, but millennials are being coined the Me Me Me Generation. That’s two more Me’s than the last. Which begs the question: is our generation significantly more selfish than those before us? If so, what does that mean for the future? One theory is that although the majority of our generation is self interested we are not selfish; our ideology is to the world’s advantage because thinking about our core identity will be what makes us able to tackle the future. A different viewpoint agrees that it’s not millennials that are selfish, but rather the youth of any generation. There is, however, a perspective dead set on the fact that millennials are significantly…
As technology has evolved and become so apart of our world its effect spread to all ends of the spectrum of every day life. The generation of high school students today can’t imagine a world without a smart phone in their pocket. In an article on how technology is changing us Howard Gardner said, “This generation expects that every aspect of life will be quick, efficient, streamlined, available immediately on demand, tell you what to do, how to do it, how others feel about it, and, at least implicitly, how you should feel about it, how you should feel about yourselves.” Social networking provides this all. We as a country, and this generation have a sense of entitlement to know everything.…
Seventy five percent of the Millennials have a profile on a social networking site, which is almost greater than all three of the previous generations combined. Generation X, the Boomer Generation, and the Silent generation percentages combine up to only eighty six percent of having a profile on social networking, (Pew). This is mainly because they don’t have access to a computer. Many Millennials are spoiled, narcissistic and lazy due to the technology and bad parenting from Generation X.…
