In the article “Generation Sell” Professor William Deresiewicz says that today’s generation, the hipsters are so involved with social media that we don’t think about anything else besides what’s happening in the internet. We are so connected to it that we can’t step away from it and we want to know the new trends that are popular and that everybody is using. We are so focused on how we appear to others that we will do anything to fit in and look pleasing to them. We have turned from being hippies, punks, slackers to a generation of selling ourselves to others. In “Generation Sell” William Deresiewicz talks about the different types of social groups that there has been over the past decades. He says that the hippies were all about love, the beatniks aimed at ecstasy, and the punks were about rage and anger, the slackers were about not involving in anything; but today’s generation are the hipsters.     The article “On Sale at Old Navy: Cool Clothes for Identical Zombies!” written by Damien Cave explains how as a society we are swayed by the flash of big corporations and in turn are loosing what real culture we have left. Damien Cave starts the article off with a scenario showing a man named “Thomas Frank”. As Frank walks by a heavily decorated Old Navy he shows his disgust saying ”Oh God, this is disgusting”. Thomas Frank is a pioneering social critic, writing articles on how businesses adopted “cool anti-corporate culture”. As the article progresses we find that these businesses offer nothing more than poor quality merchandise at a low price, and the consumer is lured in by the promise of quality for less. Stores such as Old Navy and Ikea use marketing tricks to keep it's customer coming back for more. Ikea sets it's store up like a maze where the exit is placed only at the registers, the room models persuade the consumer they need everything they see. Old Navy hands out extra large shopping bags as a gesture of good customer service but can influence over spending. Damien Cave brings these issues up so that we the reader are aware of such trickery used by certain chain businesses. Society is so accustomed to these marketing schemes we don't realize we are replicating each others homes but in different variations; we can all buy the same sofa and not notice. We are lead to believe that we can find happiness in our belongings but that is far from the truth. This merchandise is poor in quality and can cause us to spend more in the end on replacements and repairs.     The coolness of New York is at a dangerous risk. What’s the danger? The answer is simple, Hipsters. Often referred to as bored, slacker trust-fund kids, the Hipster is a noticeably present subculture in New York City. Before coming to New York from a small college town in Texas, I had never even heard of these “hipsters.” From my first impression, they seemed to try so hard to be unique and “cool” by their own definition, which, for the most part, was an accurate assumption. I see now, after observing them for quite some time, that the hipster’s look and lifestyle is a backlash to the mainstream and, for partially that reason, mainstream doesn’t like them (causing what seems to be a war that the hipster will eventually lose). The hipster culture looks like a combination of a counter-culture and a mixture of different cultures at the same time. By setting themselves apart from everyone else as a result of looking cool, or “deck” as they would say, they also seem to inherit a more snobbish and obnoxious demeanor as a group from the most subjective topics, like clothing and music. This, along with the hipsters need to exemplify irony and apathy towards everything they do, seems to cause many people outside of this culture to despise them. Though they ironically have the term, hip, in their subculture name, they have become anything but that; this is a telltale sign that they won’t be around much longer, and the people of New York won’t miss them but, in fact, will welcome their downfall.…
