Summary Of Letters By Danticat

In the first story written by Danticat, we read the events of the story through letters. The letters were written by a separated couple, though the letters never reached the other person. The boy had taken a boat to leave Haiti, the girl leafy Port-Au-Prince with her family. Both of them were trying to escape the murderous soldiers out to kill the youth federation. In the letters we get a sense of what both of them are going through. In the boys letters he talks about the boat beginning to sink and includes that people who are dick are being thrown overboard or are jumping. In the girl's letter, she talks about the soldiers and all the inhumane things they're doing to people. She goes on to say the soldiers were going to arrest her and, “peg her as a member of the youth federation”.
Her and her family then moved to Villa Rose and began a life there. In the story the women seemed to be portrayed as ‘sex slaves’. They're forced to have sex with the male in the house, even if it's their son or father. The girl Célianne was raped by twelve soldiers when they broke into her home and they forced her mother to have sex with her brother. I think the women are portrayed this way because the soldiers are afraid of them. The soldier are afraid the women are withholding information about the youth federations where abouts. They think that by treating them terribly it will break them. That it won't allow them to feel formidable over information the soldiers don't have. This benefits the soldiers because they're putting fear in the women's hearts at this point. The women may give up and surrender which will cause the soldiers to feel
