The book starts with the description of Liar’s Poker game which is played on the trading floors of Salomon Brothers Inc. The boss, John Gutfreund, himself challenges the best player in the firm John Merriweather who also happened to be the best trader of the firm. Gutfreund proposed an offer of a single hand of Liar’s Poker worth a million dollar with no bitching and whining from the loser at the end of the game. Liar’s Poker was played with 2 or more players sitting in a circle and each holding a dollar bill. Each player stated some figures like “three fives” meaning the serial number of dollar bills of all players combined contained three fives or the player could say “I doubt it” in which case a single player is …show more content…
So the other competitors offered them highly lucrative packages and started recruiting talent from Salomon Brothers. This later on proved to be biggest mistake of firm to let go of important traders at the cost of few dollars to rivals who then started sharing mortgage bonds trading knowledge in other firms. The knowledge of mortgage bonds and other firms’ efficiency in trading them bought several buyers on the stage. CMOs(collateralized mortgage obligation) were traded by all the firms and since there were many buyers and demand exceeded supply the mortgages became less attractive and the return on them declined. What followed was depreciation of importance of mortgage bonds in any form and many traders such as Howie Rubin and Smith lost their firms a lot of money because of reading wrong signals from the market. The Outcasts of Poker Flat is a short story filled with connotations of redemption and imbued with an incredible kind of misconception that only the most arrogantly self-righteous could conceive. Its primary purpose is to act as a cautionary tale about a seemingly respectable judgment that unjustly condemns four people to their untimely ends. Harte’s story is set in an 1800’s settlement brimming with discord and mistrust. After a series of very unfortunate events the townspeople decide to exile the “undesirables” of the town. And so, Harte’s ragtag group of outcasts are thrown together in a dire bid for survival. In the beginning the reader is only made aware of the labels Poker Flat had given the refugees and thus inevitably forms a negative…

Beginning in October 1979, large increases in interest rates raised Fannie Mae’s interest expense, and the Enterprise lost money in four of the six years between 1980 and 1985. Fannie Mae began guaranteeing mortgage-backed securities (MBS) in 1981 and, after interest rates fell, became profitable again in 1986. In 1987 the Enterprise doubled its EPS, starting a 17-year pattern that continued through 2003. Through the early 1990s, Fannie Mae sustained rapid profit growth primarily by expanding the share of conventional single-family mortgage debt outstanding in the U.S. financed with its guaranteed MBS. Fannie Mae’s financial success gave senior management steadily increasing amounts of money to use in efforts to influence the regulatory and legislative processes. Over the years the Enterprise compiled a remarkable track record of achieving its political…

In “The Liar” by Tobias Wolff, the main character uses lies as a way of getting revenge on his mother, to make him feel better about his father’s death. James is trying to get revenge on his mother, because of her mistreatment and lack of presence throughout his childhood. The first time James realizes that his lies have had an effect on her is when he says, “She felt lonely in her confusion but didn't call anyone because she also felt like a failure. My lying had that effect on her. She took it personally… She thought that she had made a mess of her family" (45). The fact that she “felt like a failure” and that “she took [his lies] personally,” tells us that James has accomplished his goal for his lies to hurt his mother. James also mentions…

Over leveraged in subprime debt. In 2007, as American house started to collapse, the subprime debt borrowers began to default, enormous numbers of CDOs owned by Bear Stearns also turned to collapse as they were linked to subprime mortgage. As we know now, subprime debt has instability and high risky characteristics. The majority of borrowers have a low credit history. While what hedge funds thinking was as in a market with soaring house prices, the risk of incurring losses on a mortgage was low. Unfortunately, it was not a case with American market. In addition, we also think the fund managers lacked plan to protect themselves from event risk. Though Bear Stearns funds managers bought Swaps, their assumptions were just based on normal real estate conditions. They never thought the condition that real estate sector became collapse.…

    How to Play Poker

    • 931 Words

There are many varieties of this highly popular card game, but I will teach you how to play the very common "five card stud". The game begins, as most do, with an "ante" of the lowest possible chip in your possession. This may be changed later on but is normally played this way. Then, the dealer "deals" the cards in a clockwise manner, one to every player, and around again as needed. Common courtesy in poker says that you don't touch your cards until they have all been placed in front of you. Then you look at your card or cards and move to betting. The person with the highest ranked card showing ( 2's or deuces being the lowest and ace being the highest unless otherwise called) "opens" the betting. This means that they will look at their hand and bet accordingly. A common bet for the first round is either the lowest chip or to "check". To check means that you would like to pass without placing a bet. Other players may bet and by doing so the bet would pass around the table to all players. If the check passes around the table, then another card is dealt free of charge. There are three common reasons to check. First, it is if you don't have anything good in your hand. Second, it is to see the bets of the other players and compare hands (a high bet meaning a seemingly good hand, low bet meaning the opposite). And third, to "bluff" your opponents for any reason. When betting, you can also "fold". This means that you drop out of the game and cannot come back in. If choosing to fold, you lose your bet, but will not have to bet…

In the second half of 2007, the banking industry and financial market showed signs of considerable stress by raising the default rate of mortgage and the decline in the value of residential mortgage-backed securities. This had led to a re-pricing of many debt instruments. By the end of 2007, Citigroup declared that the fair value of its U.S. sub-prime related direct exposure could decline by 20%. This affected Citigroup’s financial results and would incur further losses in the future.…
