In My Brother Sam is Dead by the Collier brothers a boy named Tim has had a normal life until war comes around the corner. When war hits Tims town, Tim and his family has to face challenges that sometimes makes them suffer. In the story the authors show me that war can divide and destroy individuals, families and communities. War can divide and destroy individuals. For example, when Mr. Heron wants Tim to deliver a letter. Tim jumps at the opportunity so he can earn some good telling points to tell his brother Sam, and earn a shilling or two. But Tim’s father doesn't want him to get hurt. This causes Tim to be torn because he is struggling between his father and Sam. This shows Tim is struggling about which side he’s on, is he a Tory or a Patriot? Tim is not the only individual who is suffering from war in the story. Mother is also torn by war. Mother starts losing hope and faith, father is already dead and she is about to lose Sam. Sam is also struggling too, he has to choose if he wants to put his country first or his family? Father is torn by war because he doesn't like war, but Sam wants to go, but father still has love for Sam. This shows war can tear apart individuals.
