High school students are motivated to learn about sex and topics revolving around sex because they are experiencing puberty and the increasing desire to have sex. Whether the students are sexually active now or not, it will benefit them to know about infectious diseases associated with having sex and how to protect themselves.…
It is important to provide opportunities for young people to give them a sense of responsibility, which will help them in the future. Recently I have organised for a Sexual Health Advisor to attend the Adventure for a Sexual Health session. During this, the young people learnt all about STI’s, different contraception methods and where they can go for advice. This gave them all the information and resources they need to make an informed choice regarding their sexual health.…
Therefore the aim was to promote sexual health through Chlamydia awareness and safe sex practice whereas the goal of the teaching at the event was to discuss to participants methods of using safe sex measures. Ewles and Simmett (2003) suggest that the objective suppose to be obtainable and relevant, therefore the objective was for the students to discuss the potential hazards associated with unsafe sexual practices which in this case Chlamydia. Naidoo and Wills (2009) therefore points out the important of health promoters to identify motivational stages which enables the health promotion models to be…
Currently, there are numerous advertisements about smoking, drug use, and eating disorders. However, there are very few health campaigns about sexual health. This is most likely due to the stereotypical associations that go along with discussing sex, and how the American culture portrays talking about sex. Sex in the United States is not an open and inviting topic among the American culture. This causes problems because young adults don’t have the resources they need to become educated on sexual health. Colleges and Universities can do a lot to improve this problem by creating health campaigns focused on sexual health. This would increase the students’ view of the importance of the topic, and may even find the topic relevant to their own lives. Making them aware of the information may not only be resourceful to them, but help their peers as…
Sex instruction is critical, however numerous amounts of students complete sex education classes with a mutilated perspective of sexuality and without a decent comprehension of contraception and safe-sex practices. Schools without sex education, leave children confused and often misguided. Students are left to learn through their parents about sex, who could, in turn, be misinformed themselves by never having taken a course in sexual education. Without sexual education classes, little is accomplished leaving a defective and contorted, one-sided point of view of safe sex such as abstinence. The lack of knowledge also can lead to an increase in teen pregnancy, and the spread of sexually transmitted disease, Sexual education should be taught to…
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, it may seem like Daisy’s selfishness and Nick’s nurturing of Gatsby’s obsession for her are the reason for Gatsby’s down fall. And although it is true that they did contribute to it, ultimately it was Gatsby’s obsession with daisy, his illusion and the past that caused his own destruction.…
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the average teenager engages in sexual intercourse by the age of seventeen, but do not marry until the mid-twenties (citation). This means that young adults are at an increased risk for unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections for nearly ten years or longer. The numbers of students engaging in sexual activity of ages thirteen to twenty-four continues to grow each year, as does the number of unplanned pregnancies and HIV infections due to not being fully educated about the risks. Today, the duty of educating students and teenagers about sexual intercourse and the risks involved is left to the government and public school system. Abstinence education programs in public…
Teens did not know their own bodies. There were little factual resources that teenagers can depend. Few choices left for them, teenagers were guided along high risk actions. Abstinence was the approved option by parents, as it teaches teens to not be sexually active but not on protection or STDS. Another path is exploration on their own means. Exploration was dangerous, because teenagers were unaware of the consequences. Both options plunged teens’ health into a abyss. Then around 1980s, media started to reach towards the topic of sexual activity in teenagers. Many teen movies brushed against the topic about sexual activity and gave more positive responses than usual. Now, there is a rapid increase in sexual activity amongst teens. Due to this rise of sexually active teens, sexual health programs in high schools need to be updated to accommodate this change. High schools need to avoid only abstinence learning and implemented new programs for…
What drew me to enroll into the medical coding program is the fact that I find the health care world to be fascinating. I started my career in the legal field and dealt with worker’s compensation and tort cases which involved getting the medical records of the clients and reviewing them to make sure we received the medical records that pertained to the accident or injury. When my legal career ended, due to the lawyer I worked for becoming the Mayor of Haverhill, I found employment in the health care field, and I have been in the health care field for six years. I started out as a Care Team Coordinator, which is a position that deals with the scheduling for the clinicians, running reports to track paperwork, etc.…
Each of us deserves medically accurate and thorough information in order to make informed decisions about our health. Teenagers who are exposed solely to abstinence-only sexual education programs are not experiencing this right to information. Abstinence-only sexual education programs preach abstaining from sex until marriage, often omitting conversations about other significant topics of sexual health – such as contraception, STIs, etc. Although practicing abstinence is the only sure way to avoid STIs and unwanted pregnancy, it is not realistic to expect all adolescents to remain abstinent until marriage. Research suggests that implementing comprehensive sexual education programs – those that include information on an array of sexual health…
There are two broad techniques used to provide sex education, comprehensive sex education and abstinence based sex education (Mezey, 2011). The abstinence-based avenue explains to children that it is morally wrong to have sex prior to a heterosexual marriage, which leads to many problems such as higher rates of unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and a lack of knowledge on all subjects related to sex and healthy relationships (2011). This is especially true amongst LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities because they are left to find out sex and sexually related experiences through trial and error, and the Internet. Comprehensive sex education on the other hand, is when students are presented with every possible contraceptive option, their benefits and risks, statistical safety from preventing pregnancy and STDs/STIs (2011). Students also learn about what a healthy relationship is and how to effectively communicate their wants, needs, and limits in a sexual relationship. Comprehensive sex education is essential for students to grow into functioning adults, and thus participating members of a democracy (2011). Historically, sex education was not viewed as a necessary aspect for students until the 1960s and the demand for evidence-based education began in 1964. During this time period, Planned Parenthood established the Sexuality Information Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) to effectively education the younger population on sex and sexuality (2011). SIECUS founded the National Guidelines Task Force in 1990 who’s mission was to make sex education a promotion of sexual health and providing a positive view on sex, in comparison to the immoral view that abstinence-based sex education provided…
(2014), community health nurses should focus their teaching at the primary level however, a review of national data indicates that any sex education is associated with delayed sexual intercourse and decreased sexual activity in those who are already sexually active in both males and females (pp. 371, 373, 1003). This fact is important as risk factors of STIs in adolescents include a greater likelihood of multiple sex partners, unprotected intercourse, and an immature biology making them more vulnerable to infection (Allender et al., 2014, p.734). Sources of sex education may include formal education through schools, peers, the media, and parents. In my school district students in the fifth-grade receive a health seminar unless their parents choose to not have them attend and then once they reach high school the students are required to take a health course, this course may be taken during the school year or completed online. As a source of secondary or tertiary prevention, area Health Departments offer a sexual health clinic that anyone 13 years of age and older may utilize without parental permission (Kansas City Health Department [KCHD] 2017; Clay County Public Health Center [CCPHC], 2016). The services offered at the Health Departments include confidential STI testing and treatment, assistance with partner notification, referral services, and patient counseling, if needed (KCHD, 2017; CCPHC,…
Karen has returned home from being in the hospital. She was experiencing vomiting, fatigue, and a drastic change in urination. After some testing, it was conclusive that she had a kidney infection. Karen was prescribed antibiotics and recommended to take a few days off. Karen goes to her local pharmacy to fill her prescription. At home, she attempts to take her antibiotics but is having difficulty understanding the intake instructions. The instructions state to take two pills orally daily. Karen questions does she take the pills together or one in the morning and one at night. Frustrated, Karen returns to the Emergency Room for assistance. Like Karen, in our scenario, many Americans have low health literacy skills. According to Davis et al…
The United States has the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy of any developed country. Each year, unprotected sex results in almost four million teenagers contracting an STD. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is also a serious health concern for young people. Of the 40,000 new HIV infections in the US every year, about 20,000 occur in people under the age of 25, unprotected sex being to blame. (1) The National Abortion Rights Advocacy League says, “By denying teens the full range of information regarding human sexuality, abstinence-only education fails to provide young people with the information they need to protect their health and well-being.” (2) Surveys done by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that “students who have sex education know more and feel better prepared to handle different situations and decisions than those who have not.” (3) If the abstinence-only approach continues, it is expected have serious consequences by denying young people access to the information they need to protect themselves. These…
Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions. Low health literacy has a negative impact on a patients health status and use of the health care system. Patients with low health literacy levels cannot make decisions regarding their health care or follow instructions on medications and health maintenance behaviors. This can affect health care in a variety of ways. It is the health care provider’s responsibility to ensure that patients with low health literacy levels are identified and measures are taken to ensure those patients understand their options and instructions. To educate these patients, health…
