Summary Of On Truth By Peter Landry

I do believe there is some truth in research, however, most things we tout as true in research is relative and would not stand up to the definition given by Peter Landry in his “On Truth” essay. Landry states, “The first thing to know about truth is that it is unchangeable; it is ageless and constant. Truth does not vary or shift, it is a piece of unalterable reality” (Landry, 2011). An example from the paper I am currently writing, is the state of affairs with the ever evolving world of internet security. Because there are sure to be advancements in the field over time, the facts that I state today are only relative to the time frame in which my research is conducted. If truth is to be without variance and un-shiftable, then the facts I
write on this subject can not be truthful. However, if I wrote the same paper and made sure to preference it by specific dates, then my facts would be true and without variance, because of the specificity of my statement. Statistics are also used and accepted in research papers as truth, however, they can fall victim to the same example I lifted previously and can also be undermined by bias. Bias can influence any research as a result of a writers affinity for a particular topic. My paper is subject to bias, because I feel strongly in one direction about the subject; this can cause a writer to choose statistics that only support a particular point of view and taint the objectivity of the writing.
