In this experiment a ketone, 9-fluorenone is reduced to and alcohol. The are two possible ways by which this reduction can occur. One is by a catalytic hydrogenation, this uses a catalyst such as palladium or nickel, hydrogen gas, and heat/pressure. This can reduced an alkane to alkene. This catalytic process is preferred in industrial practices because the cost is low in the long run and more importantly there is little to no waste expense. However, hydrogen gas is dangerous due to being very flammable/combustible. Therefore, a reducing agent will be used in this experiment instead. There are multiple types of reducing agents that reduce different types of functional groups and thus selection of the proper reducing agent is crucial.…

When we read a particular piece of literature the author has a main point that she wishes to be heard and understood. In order to do this effectively, many writers use Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle. The interplay of presenting facts, soliciting emotional responses, and creating a tone of credibility is important in order to persuade the reader of the writer’s point of view. The use of logos cites facts, statistic, and evidence to substantiate the claims made and to validate the argument. Pathos is used to bring emotion to the work so the reader can connect on a psychological level. This is accomplished using certain words, quotes, interviews, or images. Words can elicit feelings of sympathy, pity, anger, or can motivate entire crowds of people to action. Last, but certainly as important as the two preceding concepts, is ethos. This allows the author to set a persuasive tone in the work that makes the piece a believable and trustworthy source of information. It…
Candidate Murillo used a lot of time preparing his order; SNC used almost a full minute after he received the order from the evaluator, which displayed a lack of urgency. During order delivery, SNC used filler words several times, and had to pause on occasion to check the information before briefing it to his team. However, SNC did brief all of the paragraphs in the order, including the subparagraphs provided by the evaluator, including a Mission paragraph with purpose statement. SNC included formations in his scheme of maneuver and billet assignments in the Execution paragraph. During movement, Candidate Murillo had to be redirected to the objective by the evaluator, but was able to remember the mission once the aggressor made noise in…

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is portrayed as being an admirable, wealthy, kind, and genuinely impressive man. Even though the novel’s narrator, Nick Carraway, heavily sympathizes with Gatsby, he has many character flaws that ultimately assure the failure of his “dream”, and even lead to his untimely demise.…

Life in the concentration camps revolved around subverting to the system to the extent possible. Primo Levi uses symbolism to emphasize that the choices made by the men in the camp were not real choices, for they were made under duress. Levi states that “the Lager was pre-eminently a gigantic biological and social experiment” When a group of people are forced to live under conditions never seen in human history, they will make decisions beyond comprehensible. Humanity can be viewed and practiced in infinite ways, in fact most individuals see this concept differently as they have their own perception of what humanity is comprised of. Francis Fukuyama the author of “Human Dignity,” argues that human dignity is attained through a concept which he coined as Factor X. This term simply defines how a human being can attain dignity once he or she is stripped of their contingent and accidental characteristics. These characteristics include skin color, looks, social class and wealth, gender, sexual preference, cultural background as well as talents that we posses. The author tries to implement how we as human beings may learn to see each other without the superficial and materialistic characteristics we accumulate throughout our lifetime by seeing one another…
