I read the book, Rules, by Cynthia Lord. It is a realistic fiction book published in 2006. It won the Newberry Honor Award in 2007.
Main Character Catherine is a sensitive, compassionate, 12-year old girl. Her brother is David, who is autistic. She doesn’t like the things that he does. Even though she doesn’t like what he does, she protects him, defends him, and stands up for him. One time, Ryan was giving gum to his friends, and when it was David’s turn, Ryan gave him an empty wrapper! Catherine stood up for him and defended him. This shows that people treat him differently just because of his autistic characteristics, which is atrocious. David goes to an OT place. Catherine comes along sometimes too, and when she came one time, she made a new friend. His name is Jason. He has cerebral palsy but is perfectly typical on the inside. He is 12 years old, just like Catherine! He is in a wheelchair, because he has cerebral palsy; he is perfectly healthy on the outside! He became friends with Catherine at David’s OT place when he liked her drawing of Kristi’s house. Catherine saw that he liked the drawing, so she gave it to him! The next time David had OT, she made cards for David’s communication book (since he can’t talk) which added to their friendship. Jason is just like any other kid, though it doesn’t look like it on the outside! He is very gentle, for example he was clenching his jaw when holding Catherine’s guinea pig so he wouldn’t scare it. He also has a great sense of humor- one example is when Jason said, “Gross! hello.” to Catherine. She said, “You can say that again”, then he really DID say it again!
