After reading the article Seeing Cultural Groupings, I realized how important it is to use the anthropological construct of culture in order to understand human behavior in business settings. The article starts off with a narrative paragraph collected by anthropologist Miriam Kaprow from a New York City firefighter. Richard Wilk envisioned the Kekchi as a traditional group of people that were isolated from the rest of the world but he realized that they had been adapted into the world economy in many ways. That is why anthropologists now know that it is more useful to look at the ways in which cultural groupings behave. Jordan also says that anthropologists have noticed that culture is not uniform because the groups are always interacting and cannot be placed within one single group. First, I would like to discuss how the learning characteristic of culture relates to my professional experience. Jordan explains that when one joins an organization, one is immersed in a new culture by a learning process. This learning process consists of training programs, stories of employees and also shared behavior patters of employees. I am fully convinced that professional culture is learned by the above factors. When I started working in the medical field at the Henry Ford Health System I was trained to learn their professional medical culture by undergoing though their training program online. After reading this article I realized that I learned this professional culture also by observing and being around my coworkers. While working with them I would repeatedly be exposed to their behaviors and now I see that I exhibit similar patterns of group behavior. This happened meanwhile I was learning to be part of this cultural grouping. We as a group working at the hospital pharmacy exhibit similar behaviors and one similar behavior that I have noticed is that the pharmacy staff is great on greeting the other staff working at the hospital and their
