Summary Of Shiloh By Bobbie Ann Mason
Leroy and Norma Jean are seemingly a normal couple, which is gathered from the first few sentences from the book, "Shiloh and other short stories." However, as the story progresses, little evidences of their problematic marriage begin to shine through. The writer, Bobbie Ann Mason shows that by Leroy and Norma Jean ignoring their problems, their marriage is falling apart.
An example of Leroy and Norma Jean sweeping their problems under the rug is when Norma Jean's mother caught her smoking. "'I didn't hear her coming. I was standing here puffing away pretty as you please,' Norma Jean says, wiping her eyes. 'I knew it would happen sooner or later," says Leroy, putting his arm around her" (Mason). They continue talking and brush the subject aside by some light banter. This example demonstrates one of the many instances of them either joking about or just not mentioning their problems.
All marriages have problems, but the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy marriage is how the two partners deal with the problems they face. A healthy marriage will talk about the problem at hand and discuss ways to deal with it; while an unhealthy marriage will ignore the problem or accuse the other

Both of them have grown and changed; however, they have not done it together therefore they do not have much in common anymore. Their conversations have gone stale. Leroy realizes something is wrong and turns to her mother, Mabel, for help. "One day, Mabel is there before Norma Jean gets home from work, and Leroy finds himself confiding in her. Mabel, he realizes, must know Norma Jean better than he does" (Mason). While confiding in another about your marriage problems is not inherently wrong, Leroy had failed to discuss things with his wife first, this should have been his first

The book that I would like to do for this book report is called Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. In this book it talks about a good story about a boy willing to do anything for a dog that he loves. While with the author some things that I found interesting is that she is best known for her children and young adult stories that are in fiction. Also before she even started writing she worked as a teacher and an editor before writing full time om 1960. This is very interesting because it shows that even though she didn’t start off as a writer she still had big success onto what she wrote and so on.…

She is very emotional and confused about what she wants and about what is going on. Norma Jean is used to not having Leroy around very much when he was truck driving but he is now home all the time and she doesn't know what to think of it and wants him to find another job. She is very distant with what she is thinking. Norma Jean is driven by having independence, "In the mornings, Norma Jean disappears, leaving a cooling place in the bed" (236). Norma Jeans relates to history differently than the other two characters because she strives to gain her mothers acceptance and wants her to be happy with the way she is living her life. Mason, who is the author of Shiloh, provides an important element of setting that helps signify the deteriorating relationship between Leroy Moffitt and his wife Norma Jean as well as the mood and essence of the story. Throughout the story, the author mentions the characters’ home. In Leroy’s world, home would represent togetherness, love, affection, and comfort because he would now spend time with Norma and feel secure. Ultimately, this would display a sign of a growing relationship. Ironically, home represents peculiarity and discomfort for Norma. According to the passage, “They never speak about their memories of Randy, which have almost faded, but now that Leroy is home all the time, they sometimes feel awkward around each other” (Mason…

This story centers around a girl who has a lot of liberty to do what she wants. However, her flaw is simply that she is too naive towards the world’s dangers and has a difficulty creating any sort of intimate relationship with anyone. Much like Laura, she has a cold relationship with her mother. Connie sees her mother as a person who is difficult to please and who is also constantly comparing her with her older sister June. “June did this, June did that,, she saved money and helped clean the house and cooked…” (Oates 492). This constant comparison with her sister drives Connie to the point of anger and disgust, where Connie cannot stand being with her mom for extended periods of time. This will go on to play a crucial role in the development of the story. Connie’s frustration with her mother is also made evident by the way Connie believes that her mother prefers June over her, stating that “if June’s name was mentioned her mother’s tone was approving, and if Connie’s name was mentioned it was disapproving” (Oates 495). Connie feels as if she is not appreciated within her household, a factor that leads her to make questionable decisions once Arnold Friend makes his appearance later on in the story. Along with her shaky relationship with her mother, Connie also has difficulty creating relationships with other people.…
