Summary Of Sonny's Blues By James Baldwin
“Sonny’s Blues,” a short story written by James Baldwin, highlights both the peace and the trials of life in Harlem during the 1950s. Sonny, the narrator’s brother, is a young musician who struggles with a heroin addiction, turning the narrator’s life upside down. Sonny has a “love” for both music and heroin, both of which help him mentally escape the harsh society he faces in the poverty-stricken and dangerous Harlem. Sonny’s passion for the freedom that both heroin and music causes him to feel allows him to find a way to stay in Harlem, rather than accomplish his goal of escaping out of the neighborhood altogether. The struggles Sonny experiences in finding his “new life” show how society impacts him in a way that pushes him to try any method possible to “make it” in the harsh reality that is Harlem. Sonny feels trapped in his unsafe neighborhood and looks for any method possible to find a way out of it until he finds music as a way to alleviate the pain of living there. When told about Sonny’s passion for wanting to play jazz music, the narrator thinks, “I simply couldn’t see why on earth he'd want to spend his time hanging around nightclubs, clowning around on bandstands, while people pushed each …show more content…
Sonny’s drug use and musical ability that are discovered during his “journey” ultimately help him find a niche in Harlem, thus causing him to end up as part of society rather than an outcast. Throughout time on earth, people have struggled with escaping the pressures and pains of society through various methods, which are highlighted in “Sonny’s Blues” through both the narrator’s and Sonny’s thoughts and actions. Although Sonny never truly escapes Harlem, his struggle of escape through music and drugs ultimately ends up freeing him from the trouble of his life by giving him newfound strength and a musical

The story is told by an unnamed, self-loathing narrator living in Harlem during the middle of the 20th century. He is an everyday family man and school teacher who does not like to expose his emotions and the pain that he’s dealt with in his life. Much of this pain has come from his brother Sonny, the main character in the story. Sonny is a long-time heroin addict that has just recently been released from prison, and his brother feels as though he has had something to do with Sonny’s addiction. “Sonny’s Blues” is a short story by the author James Baldwin. It is a story about two brothers and `their severe struggles in Harlem and the different ways in which they handled them. The author shows through the narrator and his brother Sonny how two individuals can follow two totally different life paths, be distant for most of their lives, but in the end find common ground through a shared understanding of the pain of human struggle, which this case expressed by Jazz. Through giving the main character specific character traits, the author shapes the central conflict that gives meaning to the story. The central conflict follows the formula person vs. self, because the narrator struggles between feeling the desire to take care of Sonny and the impulse to throwing Sonny to the curb because of his always values and bad decisions. The narrator starts to realize many things starting after the death of his daughter Grace and culminating with him finally listening to his brother play music. The central idea resolves it self by the Narrator empathizing with his brothers struggles in life and finally understanding through Sonny’s music how he dealt with that suffering. This allows him to realize that he must embrace the conflicting nature of his feelings for Sonny and that the bonds of brotherhood should transcend these things.…

“Sonny’s Blues” is set in post-World War II New York, in the midst of an important cultural and political revolution that permanently changed the country. Artists from all over the world had made New York a new cultural capital, establishing Greenwich Village, where Sonny briefly lives. A diverse array of artists , including the painter Jackson Pollack, musician Charlie Parker, and writer Jack Kerouac, all converged in New York around this time. These artists learned and borrowed from one another. In “Sonny Blue’s,” Sonny wants to move past the traditional conventions of music, as did many postwar artists. At the same time that the art scene in New York was exploding, thousands of African American soldiers were returning home from the war and heading north toward communities like Harlem, where, instead of finding new job opportunities and equal rights, they found newly constructed housing projects and vast urban slums. Sonny and his brother both serve in the war, and each returns to find a radically different life in America.…
