The poem Students by Tom Wayman expresses the idea that once you start following one of the education theories you cannot be swayed into following another. In the poem he talks about the four education theories: The Vaccination Theory of Education, The Dipstick Theory of Education, The Kung Fu Theory of Education, and The Easy Listening Theory of Education. Mr. Wayman thinks that it is likely all students use one of these theories of education. The Vaccination Theory is when people think that education can come to a end. People who believe in this theory once they have attained a some level of education (varies on person) they think that they no longer need to learn anything new so they stop really caring about knowledge. The Dipstick Theory
is one of the most popular with students. Students that fall into this category feel that just getting by is good enough and that a mere passing grade is acceptable. The Easy Listening Theory is created for students who believe that they can pay attention and learn while listening to music. To escape a boring reality in front of them, students embellishing this theory will put their headphones on and enjoy a more “pleasant world”. When questioned by their teachers, the “Easy Listening Student” will assure that they are listening to everything that is being taught. As to whether or not these students are telling the truth, only their grades and knowledge will tell (Shane) .The kung Fu Theory of Education is the one in the poem that wayman wants the students to learn. It talks about learning as a self defence and the knowledge gained will help students through their problems that they have to avoid and move around in the future in the future. “Wayman knew his notion would be poured over / with more intensity / then anything else he had taught” (Wayman 44-46). Shows that in the end of the poem the teacher knows that the students will just forget that he tried to teach them a new message and just continue with their lives as if nothing happened. This will happen because us as humans beings have a hard time changing our views and opinions on things that we do. History will show this and we tend to think that we are right at all times. This theories show that if you are learning by them that you will not likely change your idea on learning and education because you ether thought the extra knowledge was not needed or you just did not care enough to learn it in the class.
