I recently read a dictionary’s definition of the verb ‘bully’ as “[to] use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants.” (MW Dict.) The article titled “Defining Bullying Down” by Emily Bazelon describes how the issue of bullying will never be solved if we continue to describe such a wide array of behaviors as bullying. Bazelon states that since it’s common to label everything from schoolyard teasing to harassment and intense violence as bullying, we can’t teach victims and bystanders how to stop it. Studies have shown that the best way to stop bullying is to deem it unacceptable. By shaming the behavior itself, we embarrass the perpetrator so they will think twice before doing…
The book, A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer, is a true story of a man’s childhood from the ages of 4 to 12 and how things went from good to bad in a matter of a few years due to his mother’s abusive tendencies toward him. It is a moving story of how this child mustered up the strength to keep living, despite his harsh circumstances. This book, for the most part, is in chronological order and each chapter is a significant event that happened throughout the few years he was under his mother’s care, before he was taken away by Child Protective Services.…
Bullying can drive a person to behave outside of their character. The short story, “The White Circle” by John Bell Clayton, supports this claim. For example, Anvil bullies Tucker and other children. This had caused them to act out of their own character. At school Anvil had shoves smaller boys down. Anvil does this to see the boys crash into the ground with fright on their faces. This became the foundation of how Tucker feels about Anvil. He didn’t despise him at the time after seeing those incidents, but then Tucker extends kindness to Anvil, and Anvil reacts by throwing rocks at him all the way home. Consequently, Tucker now has no soft emotions concerning Anvil. Another example, in the story of when bullying caused Tucker to act outside…

The pressure of racial segregation was reaching a boiling point in 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama. After being arrested for his part in the Birmingham Campaign, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote an open letter in response to “A Call for Unity”, written by eight white clergymen from Birmingham. King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" is a true call for unity, as he clearly states and points out facts that the clergymen have omitted from their letter. King is clearly not looking to stoke the fire of segregation; he was merely looking to solve the situation at hand and trying to peacefully end racial segregation in the United States.…
