So, he’s done everything in his power to keep helping Nicaragua, even though it’s going against American laws. He decides to support the Contras who are rebelling against the Cuban backed Sandinistas, which resulted in one of the most talked about scandals in the late 1900’s. In a report from the Public Broadcast Service, they mention that Reagan says the Contras were, “the moral equivalent to our Founding Fathers”. John Lewis Gaddis is a history professor at Yale University, lecturing an undergraduate class every Monday and Wednesday on the Cold War. He wrote The Cold War: A New History based on questions some of his prior students had on the Cold War, as well as making a shorter, more understanding book for students to read. Gaddis provides a fantastic overview of the Cold War but could have organized the information a lot better. For instance, if he put it in chronological order rather than jumping back and forth between decades, it would have made it a lot easier to understand what caused certain events. Gaddis was born April 2, 1941 in Cotulla, Texas.…

“Men joined the Marine Corps for many reasons . . . I’d joined up to dodge the draft and ended up being sent to war” (Brady 8-9). This brief yet poignant statement begins the story of how James Brady ended up serving in the Korean War. As a young adult the draft was being reinstated and Brady did not feel the desire to fight in a war. He and a few of his friends decided instead to join the Platoon Leaders Class with the Marines, which had students spend two summers at the marine Corps Schools in Quantico, Virginia. After these two summers, graduates would become Lieutenants, but they could not be drafted. Shortly after Brady graduated, the war began in Korea and his class learned they had to prepare to be sent out. The Coldest War: A Memoir of Korea is a first-person narrative of Brady’s life during the war, including his time as a platoon leader, his interactions with other members of the military, and his own personal thoughts during this time.…
