First off, Odysseus was a very brave person. Even though and underdog, Odysseus never backed down. His first act of bravery was his ability to face the mighty Trojan army. He was selected to join the war and refused. So the Greeks put his baby Telemachus in front of a plow. He quickly stopped it and accepted the challenge being the brave person he was.” But the ‘draft board’ was smarter than Odysseus. They threw his baby Telemachus in front of his oncoming plow.”(David Adams Leeming 643) Another act of bravery on Odysseus’ part, was taunting the massive Cyclops Polyphemus. ”O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? Puny, am I, in a caveman’s hands? How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal?”(Homer 476) The last act of Odysseus’ bravery was his willingness to go to the underworld. There Odysseus met Thebes. Thebes requested that Odysseus let him taste blood. Odysseus, the brave man that he was, cut himself to please Thebes. “At this I stepped aside, and in the scabbard let the long sword ring home to the pommel silver as he bent down to taste the somber blood.”(Homer 615)…

Throughout Homer’s “The Odyssey,” Odysseus’ actions and choices are the driving point of the plot. When he and his crew encounter Polyphemus the Cyclops, he tries to secure his legacy by shouting his real name, and giving other important information away. After this, half of Odysseus’ men are turned into swine when they encounter an enchantress and give into temptation, and though no men are killed, the crew is again delayed in their journey by a year. Misfortune and death are prevalent throughout the consequent chapters, where men are constantly lost, and those that survive begin to lose faith in their leader. Telemachus’ house is overrun by suitors trying to marry his mother, Penelope, since Odysseus has been gone for years and is presumed dead by almost everybody. The suitors embody what it means to be an awful guests and “feed on another’s goods and go scot-free” (Homer 1.187). They all make fun of their host and have intruded on their space for years on end trying to marry Odysseus’s wife while consuming all of Telemachus’ food and drink. All of the suitors were punished my Odysseus and Telemachus when “Odysseus aimed and shot Antinous square in the throat” (Homer 22.15) which started the blood bath. Odysseus and Telemachus got help from the gods to rid their home of the suitors. Because of their bad behavior they get punished by the gods. This also happened on Odysseus’ journey when he landed on the island of the cyclops and met Polyphemus. When Odysseus asked him to be hospitable towards him and his men, the cyclops replied by saying “you must be a fool, stranger, or come from nowhere,/ telling me to fear the gods or avoid their wrath!” (Homer 9.307-308). Polyphemus, one of the worst hosts in The Odyssey, started eating Odysseus’ shipmates and locked them in his cave when he caught them stealing some of his cheese. Odysseus wanted to kill him then and there but wouldn’t be able to get out of the cave, so he soon came up with the plan to get him and…

Getting to the underworld was not a problem he just had to perform certain tasks to get Tiresias to come out and give him his prophecy. He had to dig a trench and pour his libations in it for the dead souls. Once he completed all of his tasks that is when everyone started to appear. The first ghost he recognized was his soldier Elpenor. When Odysseus saw him he was shocked, he could not believe that he was dead. Elpenor groaned and told Odysseus about his death and now he did not get a proper burial. This is essential to ancient greeks because that is the only way a soul can be at ease in their afterlife. Every single ghost Odysseus came in contact with was miserable, angry, and bitter. They all asked about their family (mainly sons) and had nothing positive about themselves. As said by Achilles he “rather be a slave on earth for another man- some dirt poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alive- than rule down here over all the breathless bodies”(Homer, Odyssey 265). For a male to say this shows how bad the underworld is; Ancient Greeks were all about their pride and manhood therefore if he rather be a slave to another man take away all of his pride. Also, when Odysseus was leaving the underworld all the spirits kept surrounding him “thousands raising unearth cries, and blanching terror gripped me” (Homer,…
