Summary Of The Play 'Once Upon A Mattress'
As the lights go black, the orchestra begins to play the overture, and the curtain opens, you are shown a cartoonish castle scene. Ursuline Academy’s <cq> production of Once Upon a Mattress, <cq> has begun.
Once Upon a Mattress is a funny adaptation of the fairytale The Princess and the Pea <cq>. In Act I, the Minstrel is telling the story of the Princess and the Pea, but says it’s not true, because he was there when it happened. Queen Aggravain <cq> was giving all of the princess-wannabe’s an unfair quiz, because they aren’t like the queen, so she doesn’t want them to marry her son, Dauntless <cq>. So, Sir Harry <cq> asks the Queen if he can go over the mountains to find a potential princess for Dauntless. She says yes, and he’s gone for a long time, and finds

The lighting and sound cues were timed very well. The stage and set crews managed their space and storage very well by making reversible castle walls for different scenes.
Princess Winnifred, played by Kennedy Carstens <cq>, had a very good voice and a strong presence every time she was on stage. Prince Dauntless, played by CJ Allen <cq>, also had a strong voice.
The Minstrel, played by Arjun Sheth <cq>, did a very good job hitting the high notes. Queen Aggravain was a sass-filled part that only Michaela Back <cq> could have pulled off. The Jester, played by Claire Westover <cq> was a fun-filled part that Claire seemed to enjoy. The dance ensemble did a marvelous job, especially in the tap number.
The lighting and sound crews did very well. Although there were a few cracking mics, they recovered and the cast continued on as if it were part of the show. The lighting was very well planned and placed in a precise position. The costumes used in the show were of very good quality. The stage crew was very quick and quiet during scene changes.
Once Upon a Mattress is a fun-filled musical that is sure to bring happiness and joy to anybody who see

The cast suited well with the characters, I personally thought that Pia Miranda portrayed Josephine very well. The way she acts with excitement and humour, is outstanding and I personally think that she is a gifted actress. The rest of the cast were pleasing to watch, and were also competent at acting.…

The main character that stood out the most to me was the well-known actor James Cordon, whom played a failed skiffle player named Francis who is in need of a job… and a meal! He gets himself in a shuffle, as working as a servant for two masters whom are currently enemies. Many words could describe Francis; funny, dopey, confused, loud, sociable, at times annoying. Not only did he make the audience laugh, he also spoke to them too! For example, asking the audience who has a sandwich, which made the audience get more involved with Francis. He also did return a sandwich and a few other treats when asked! He had also made the audience a part of the performance as he needed some volunteers to get up on stage and help him out in the jobs he had to do. Such as, lifting a trunk and needing help on food preparations.…

The lights on the sides of the stage shines right into the audience’s faces that were sitting on the far sides of the house. Besides this distraction, the lighting was often very dim or sparsely lit. I thought it might have been a limitation of the space, but there were a few scenes that were very well lit, so I was confused about the purpose of that. It didn’t really seem to add much to the production and was much more distracting in its limitations than it was enhancing. Sound was a prominent part of the show, often used during the fight scenes. I actually liked the use of sound in the fight scenes. Although the intense music was another component of the over-dramatic action of the show, I felt that it was one of the few necessary ones. There obviously needed to be some sound to fill this time, and it would have been odd for it to be something other than the intense mood that was clearly trying to be created. Besides…

The acting in this play was great. The actor I was looking most forward to was Brooke Shields. Honestly don’t think that she was that great. It could have just been the character of Morticia, but after it was all over I felt like she stood out the least. To be fare it could have just been that she was having a bad night though because when she was handing out autographs after the play she apologized for not doing well. The other star, Roger Rees, was pretty good. He definitely was not my favorite part of the show, but he did a good job playing Gomez. He was somewhat dry, but he had enough to keep him memorable. Adam Riegler was the young boy who played Pugsley. He did an outstanding job and unfortunately wasn’t a huge part of the show. I would have liked it if they had involved him in a few more scenes. The best part of the show was definitely Rachel Potter in the role of Wednesday. She blew everyone else out of the water in terms of her acting and singing. She was the true star of the show in my opinion. The way she acted really made the audience want things to work for her and the character Lucas. The actors Heide Blickenstaff and Adam Grupper did a good job in the role of Lucas’ parents. I feel that they did there job in being good character foils to Gomez and Morticia. Jesse Swenson was another actor that I thought did great. He played Wednesdays love interest Lucas. He did a fantastic job and was almost as good as Rachel Potter. Another role which I was disappointed in was Brad Oscar…

They play was quite an interesting play with its use of comedy and tragedy. The actors did a terrific job on portraying the characters. The set was small so it was much easier to see their reactions. The introduction to the play was pretty unique with those people in tight pants and glitter all over everybody in the lobby. They never broke character no matter what went on in the lobby. Later they used as prompts on stage which was pretty interesting because at times I was so into the play I forgot they were there acting as a car or a door.…

He delivers Shakespeare’s language with as much power as Sorkin’s lines earlier this year in Steve Jobs. His anger is visceral, his pain is heart-wrenching, his drive is palpable. Marion Cotillard is at her English-language best as Lady Macbeth. She is villainous, sexual, and sympathetic. The rest of the supporting cast does a commendable job with the admittedly dense source material. Duncan and Macduff are standouts, but there is not a single bad performance in the film.…

The singing ability in this show was spectacular. I was impressed by the lyrics of the songs as well as how the acting fit right in with the vocals. The dancing was phenomenal. I felt that the audience was a little dry and slow to react to the dialogue. For how much energy the show provided, I am unsure as to why the audience did not connect.…

A Midsummer Night Dream is a play written by the late William Shakespeare. This play is about a love triangle how one loves the other when the other does not like them until finally it all ends in a resolution, as they have a secret fairy world looking over at them, this play is almost like a mix between the fantasy world and the real! Bottom is one of the characters in this play, and in this play Bottom is a humorous and confident character, although being intelligent in other fields Bottom is not a very clever or educated man. Bottom and his fellow workmates are named the “rude mechanicals”, unsophisticated men but rather great tradesmen, working not with the mind but with the hands, though Bottom may be labeled a “rude mechanical” in many…

The characters were satisfactory. Although they were loud and energetic, they did not articulate their words. I could not understand anything that they were saying. I left out of the theatre knowing sixteen words: Rudolph, the, red, nose, reindeer, snow, pay, rent, moon, fuck, you, light, my, candle, Roger, and please! In fact, every line was sung. I felt like the characters were singing at me not to me. In addition, they were all over the place; the characters did not do a good job at conveying the story of Jonathon Larson, throughout the musical they kept running around, jumping, and screaming. By them doing that, it did not…

On Friday, May 6th, I saw Woodland High School's Play Production of Once Upon a Mattress. A weekend before, I had gone to see Pioneer High School's Production of The Addams Family. Let me Just say, all school “rivalry” or whatever set aside, Once Upon a Mattress was undoubtedly better. The play was about a wicked queen who didn’t want her son to marry and take her throne. One day, a dirty and uncivilized young girl claiming to be a princess, comes with interest of marrying the prince. Certain that the girl could not possibly be a princess, the queen tests their guest by placing a pea in the bed she is offered for the night, covered by 20 mattresses. In the morning, the guest tells her hosts that she endured a sleepless night, kept awake by…
