Summary Of The Story 'Hills Like Elephants'
What does it take to be a good person? Lane and Sherri are very religious people. Lane and Sherri met at campus ministries in their third year in college. When Sherri and Lane found out that she is pregnant, both were lost and don’t know what to do. Sherri was torn between her decisions and the morality of terminating the pregnancy. Sherri is also torn between wrong and right; evil and good because of her faith. Sherri also wonders if Lane loves her enough to be with her. Sherri asked in prayer for guidance for her decision. Did she make a good or bad decision? Did Sherri value herself and her faith in GOD?

She is not sure if she is ready to be a mom or if she is ready for the responsibility. Also, she knows that Lane does not love her enough because Lane is influencing her to have an abortion. Lane and the American guy in the story of “Hills like White Elephants” are the same. For men they think it is easy for a woman to do the abortion, but they don’t know how it will impact or affect their behavior and self-esteem afterwards. The woman who even think or act to do an abortion is a big sin (it is also depends on the situation). The girl in “Hills like White Elephants” and Sherri they are going through a tough …show more content…
To say least… by Kahlil Gibran, "If you love somebody, let them go, for if they return, they were always yours. And if they don't, they never were." Since Sherri decides to keep the baby. She is letting Lane go because that’s how love is…
At the end, Sherri is still a good people because when she said to Lane that she wishes him well and to respect her decision. The difference between “Hills like White Elephants” and “The Good People” is that the American’s girlfriend has a voice to speak while Sherri does not have the voice to speak what Wallace did is to narrate what Lane was thinking but don’t know what Sherri’s feelings with all this except for not having an abortion.
What example is she bringing to her college? She goes to Peoria Junior College, a Christian college, but yet she committed an awful sin….maybe it’s a reminder that all human being makes mistakes, no matter how big or small your sin are as long as you pray with all your heart, GOD will forgive you as long as you are not denying it that you made a mistake

The setting is in the spring, at the park. While sitting on a picnic table Lane and Sheri are faced with the dilemma of going through with a scheduled appointment for an abortion. Lane is torn between what he knows is right and what he wants, which is to be free from the burden of raising a child with someone he is not sure he even loves. Bucher points out the division and dichotomy within the story such as; “two great and terrible armies within himself”, “Two-hearted”, “their shadow a two-headed thing in the grass before them”, the downed tree being “half-hidden” in the water. The dichotomy suggests a dual struggle between two things: good vs. evil and division vs. union. When Lane reassures Sheri that he will be there for her and he will go with her because it was the decent thing to say. His heart and conscience struggle with the division of doing what is wrong, and knowing in his soul what his spiritual convictions demand. Sheri says nothing except acknowledging, “Where he’d be was the waiting room” Which would be far removed from the pain and guilt she would be experiencing in the adjacent room (Wallace 2). Bucher describes Sheri’s demeanor as “she was blank and hidden.” I believe her to be deep in thought and…

Kate Braverman’s “Pagan Night” is a story about a young woman named Sunny who departs with her boyfriend after their band breaks up. They are living in a van and have an unplanned child. Sunny attempts to give it a name, however she is unable to do so. Throughout the story she has urges to kill the baby and make her boyfriend content as he had not wanted this child in the first place. This story is reflective of the struggle many young mothers face today when they face unplanned pregnancy. Sunny and her boyfriend especially were not expecting Sunny to become pregnant and when she does that is when everything in their lives messes up. They are both really young to be parents in that they haven’t even figured out who they are as individuals and what they both want to do in life, essentially basic things that are crucial to have been figured out before one decides to start a family. Both Sunny and her boyfriend do not seem to have sufficient amount of resources to provide simply for each other and this baby will become a burden upon them and their fun, easy going and chill life-style. Also, it doesn’t even seem like they know or understand each other so well either. For instance, they both have a very poor communication system in that Sunny is not able to comfortably express her complete thoughts and concerns with Dalton. Every time asks her what she is thinking about her response is always “Nothing” (page 502). She does not find it important to share her concerns with Dalton, which is unhealthy for a relationship especially parenthood.…

To say that there is no good in evil is to deny the very reality of evil’s existence. Black and white thinking such as the topic previously stated is what truly can hurt us the most. When you look at moral issues you must acknowledge that it is a grey spectrum, with many different viewpoints. If I told any person who has actually read East of Eden that I admired Cathy? They would think me insane and possibly give me some nasty looks, as well as cross the street when I walk past. But since you have to read this essay, I think it’s fair that I make my point. Cathy is a real go-getter, she does what she has to to make ends meet. She isn’t easily swayed, and has a strong moral foundation, whether or not it’s a good one is a moot point. Lastly, she’s not easily discouraged. Even in the face of direct adversity, she brushes herself off and keeps on trucking.…

She was willing to give up so much and prioritize the lives of others while remaining faithful. Although at times throughout the movie she did have her doubts in God, she persevered to show that her faith was larger than her circumstances, and she could go through anything that God put in front of her. Personally, I take away that I can also apply this to my life. After I feel defeated, I need to take into account where I see God in my life. Often times I am so busy that I lose track and tend to think that God is not with me. Her example shows me that God is forever present with us in our struggles, no matter how we feel. He walks with us on our journey back to him, giving us opportunities to help his creation and care for eachother. The hardships and obstacles that we face are there to give us a challenge to overcome, and, in the end, strengthen our love in God and the friendship that we…

One of the main characters is Lane A. Dean, Jr., who is 19 years old and studies accounting and business.4 Lane is a very reflective person because he reflects a lot on how he is and how he thinks he should be. “He knew it was wrong, knew something was required of him that was not this terrible frozen care and caution, but he pretended to himself he did not know what it was that was required.”5 This shows that he is a conscientious person and that he has high expectations for himself. Through the whole short story thoughts like the mentioned quote are seen. It seems like Lane is not satisfied with the way he is and keeps comparing himself to his girlfriend, Sheri. “He was starting to believe that he might not be serious in his faith. He was desperate to be good people, to still be able to feel he was good.”6 The fact that he is moving away from his faith makes him question whether he is a good person or not. It makes him confused about his identity, about who he is. Lane is also confused when it comes to his love for his girlfriend and that could be the reason why they are not happy sitting together.7…

Lane knew he couldn 't make up his girlfriend 's mind because "he knew if he was the salesman of it and forced it upon her that was awful and wrong" (Wallace, 152) and he knows it isn 't his place to make a decision for her. However, he wishes he could know what Sheri is thinking and "get her to open up and say enough back that he could see her and read her heart and know what to say to get her to go through with it" (152). Sheri knows Lane Dean is a good person, and that he respects her enough to know he cannot force her to side with him, but he still wishes he could persuade her to have the abortion. Ultimately, it is Sheri 's decision to have the abortion, or cancel the appointment. Similarly, included in the long list of instructions in "Girl" is "how to make a good medicine to throw away a child before it even becomes a child"(Kincaid, 120), so the girl can decide for herself whether or not to have an abortion. Beside how to make medicine, the girl is taught other gender specific lessons that include cooking, sewing, laundry, and grocery shopping. She needs to learn how to sew in order to hem a dress "so to prevent yourself from looking like the slut I know you are so bent on becoming" (120) and looking indecent in public. All of these instructions are aimed to make it easier for the girl to find a husband by teaching her "how you set a table for dinner with an…
