Quintana start off being ill with pneumonia and on Christmas morning she went to the hospital and went into septic shock due to the pneumonia taking control over her lungs she went into a coma. Quintana did not wake up from her coma until January 2004. Once she was release the family decided to have the funeral for John. After that Quintana and her husband decided to move to Malibu, California to recuperate, but as soon as they landed in Los Angeles Quintana had a massive brain hemorrhage that had required emergency neurosurgery. Doctors had feared that she may not survive and if she did she would suffer from brain damage. Didion flew out to Los Angeles to be with her daughter. They ended being there for months until Quintana was stable and healthy enough to be transfer to a hospital in New York. During her time in Los Angeles Didion began to experience what she called in the book “the vortex effect.” This is a reaction where environmental triggers would unexpectedly set off emotional flashbacks of her life with John and Quintana. Didion tried to avoid landmarks that would remind her of happy times with her family she was brought into the vortex effect in the most unexpected times.
