In Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book Braiding Sweetgrass, she makes a compelling argument for the planet’s sustainability. Through several chapters, she illustrates how, despite how the Earth provides for all of our needs, we do not repay the favour and instead destroy the life it has left. We are not realizing the value of preserving the environment; instead, we are adapting to the thought that the extended use of fossil fuels is typical, climate change is irreversible, environmental pollution is an unfixable problem, endangered species are beyond salvation, and society has become increasingly disconnected to the planet as it once was. Kimmerer articulates this throughout multiple chapters.…

Green Grass Running Water is a novel written by Thomas King in which he explores the implications that colonization has on Indigenous people in a post colonial context. Colonization is a continuous process in which an empire acquires and maintains power by having an unequal relationship with a group of people while taking over their land. In King’s novel he emphasizes that colonization is an ongoing process. Even in a post colonial land, Indigenous people are still being oppressed by their colonizers. One really powerful tactic that oppressors use to maintain the unequal power dynamic is demonstrating a Western norm through pop culture. Western pop culture valourizes the lives of white individuals, which is demonstrated in the heroism in which John Wayne is seen. Doing this enforces the ideology of white supremacy over Indigenous people by having them their after internalize their oppression. In this novel King demonstrates how colonizers are able to maintain their hegemonic control of the individuals they have colonized by having them try to reach the western cultural norms demonstrated through pop culture.…

The tall grass prairie is an ecosystem native to central North America, with fire as its primary periodic disturbance. In the past, tall grass prairies covered a large portion of the American Midwest, just east of the Great Plains, and portions of the Canadian Prairies. They flourished in areas with rich loess soils and moderate rainfall of around 30 to 35 inches per year. To the east were the fire-maintained eastern savannas. In the northeast, where fire was infrequent and periodic wind throw represented the main source of disturbance, beech-maple forests dominated.…

Comedy is a form of cognitive reappraisal, which Drew Hayden Taylor effectively integrates throughout Motorcycles and Sweetgrass to address tragic issues. Personally, I agree with Thomas King, that bombarding the reader with tragedy only results in their lack of interest. I believe that Taylor masters the use of humour to introduce sinister issues; he uses humour as a lubricating tool to ease the tension of the plot and maintain the readers engagement. Particularly, in chapter fourteen, I was intrigued by the way that Taylor glazes over the concept of the fallibility of humanity through Virgil's visit with Wayne. Due to their lack of knowledge, Virgil, and sadly, the entire population of Otter Lake, fall victim of humanity’s tendency to judge…

When the tide is high and waves crash about, air is mixed with the water, thus increasing oxygen content. This is due to the fact that when waves crash about, the water will be more exposed to the air and cause an increase in the amount of oxygen present in the water. When the tide is low and periwinkles are exposed, there is no shortage of oxygen for the periwinkle snails either because the surrounding air is composed of around 21% oxygen, which is enough oxygen for a periwinkle snail. To survive in conditions that change often, periwinkles keep their mantle cavity filled with water. This prevents the gills from collapsing as the gills will be supported and moist, allowing them function effectively. When the oxygen from the water is used…
