These are all explained in the reader on page 7. For each student, I will keep a list of the errors I find in your essays. I will post these on a homework assignment at the top of our ilearn website, so you know what errors you are responsible for. I will work individually with you in workshops or conferences to show you how to correct your most frequent error patterns. On the last three essays of the semester I will lower the grade on a particular essay in the following manner if you have an average of more than 13 proofreading errors per 1500 words on that particular essay (approx 3 per page): Essay Grade Reduction 1 1/3 grade off (A to A-) for errors on your list only Next-to-last 2/3 grade off (A to B+) for all errors listed above Final One full grade off (A to B) for all errors listed above Ethics and Attendance: Plagiarism can destroy your college career. Writing 121, English Composition, teaches you college-level writing skills, the kind you will need for essay assignments, term papers, and exams, as well as perhaps your own further explorations into your writing talents. We’ll read, identify and write the four classic forms of essays, also called “modes of discourse” — e.g., expository, descriptive, narrative, and argumentative (traditionally nicknamed EDNA). Most importantly, though, we’ll study and practice the writing process, how to select and narrow a topic, how to generate and organize ideas, and how to revise drafts.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

From Darwin to this reflection paper, English 121 is a journey on how to write at an academic level. It taught me so much about the Academic Writing Process. I didn’t know what a Thesis was, or the format for writing, for example; the Creative Title, Hook, and how to write a great intro. It was also my first exposure to citations and how to correctly cite something. Professor Ridgeway has an ability to really connect to his students through humor. I really enjoy how he was readily available to answer me questions and help me understand when I need it.…

I have been through many years of English courses, grammar courses, and even foreign languages, but none have been as beneficial as this Dual-Credit Composition I class. Over this course, there has been nothing but positive influence to both my writing skills and my creativity. This improvement could not have come without the practice of writing five full papers, and each paper consisted of an outline, rough draft, and final copy. Since this is a dual-credit course, I can reap the benefit of not having to take Composition I in college. Without the constant guidance of my teacher, Mrs. Brenda Key, none of these opportunities would have been available for my taking. Through taking a part in this Dual-Credit Composition I course, I have made major…

Courage means to overcome fear and failure, being inspired to take that next step even if you are afraid. Courage means to push forward even when you feel like you are being held back by a brick wall. This is a description of Luther Gibbs. He had it hard growing up and became an addict at a very young age. He was and is a strict parent but could also make you laugh your head off with one of his farfetched stories of how he met my mom. We would ask him to tell the stories over and over because they were funny and he always changed something in them so you didn’t know what was coming next. Imagination, humor and the ability to make others laugh without trying, Luther Gibbs, the strictest comedian you'll ever meet.…

According to the syllabus for English 1100, Composition I Learning Community, “Compose Yourself,”, “It is a course designed both to introduce you to the conventions of academic writing as well as to the world of the academy generally.” (Crowell 1) I tried to understand what that actually meant. We would be give five essays this semester that would go through multiple revision processes. Our first assignment was an ungraded diagnostic essay that was posted to Canvas. It did not seem that bad, we were just writing a couple paragraphs about our opinions on if our voices in politics were heard or not. I thought this was just like any normal essay where you either agreed or disagreed and then you stated why, but it was much more than that. This…

Before signing up for Composition I, I asked to myself why do I have to take this? In fact, I used to find English classes insufferable, but I never imagined that I would adore and write compositions with full of confidence and passion. Now a days, students take in a fear of signing up for a composition class. And the main concern of this is that students are required to cover three main topics which include: reading, writing, and literature. The difficulty of gathering ideas in writing and interpreting the text in the literature makes it hard on students because the instructors expect students to express the author’s ideas and give the right meaning to its context instantly.…
