I could see nothing that might be holding us up but I noticed on the left of the street there was a military cemetery . . . and on each grave there was planted a sunflower . . . I stared spellbound . . . Suddenly I envied the dead soldiers. Each had a sunflower to connect him with the living world, and butterflies to visit his grave. For me there would be no sunflower. The Sunflower, by Simon Wiesenthal, was an intriguing and thought –provoking novel that raised many questions on the theological and moral concept of forgiveness. Furthermore, it delved into the matter of whether an individual has the right to forgive in the name of others, or whether forgiveness of the perpetrator was even deserved in the first place. The narrative is told from the first person point of view of Simon Wiesenthal, a young man in his 30s, imprisoned in a work camp. He tells his story of a dying Nazi’s plea for forgiveness and his own subsequent actions. After we hear his story, we can read the opinions of many individuals that tell what they would have done in Simon’s place, and add their own insights into the discussion. Before we delve into the specifics of what I would have done in Simon’s place, and which contributor I can relate to most, I would like to discuss the concept of forgiveness, and what it means to me.…

In Lorraine Hansberry’s play “A Raisin in the Sun,” Walter Younger is an idealist who failed to see reality and how things actually work out. Walter is in his 30s yet he still lives with his mother, who holds the family together. He isn’t capable of caring for a family and making the right decisions. He has a dream of owning a liquor store that his family opposes to yet he still tried to obtain it. Walter is a man of flaws because of his bitterness towards others, such as George Murchison, and in a way because of his racism toward white people. He is also sexist to women and is jealous of the success of others. Walter’s family plays a role in changing his views as well. They all shaped him and taught him the values and virtues of not backing down and giving into racism against black people. Throughout the play, Walter matures and begins to see reality and that his decisions have consequences and impacts on others.…

was once said by Lorraine Hansberry, "There is only one large circle that we march in, around and around, each of us within our own little picture - in front of us - our own little mirage that we think is the future." The quote means that each individual has their perspective on life within the continuous life cycle and each person has their own decisions and prospect to determine their fates. This theme relates to the three generations of women mentioned in Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun because the daily dilemmas and altercations in the Younger family may cause Beneatha, Ruth, and Mama to convoy the same fate though they have diverse expectations for the future.…

Meadow voles, a closely related species, are polygamous where the mother is the only parent involved in rearing the young. Lim et al. (2004) determined that dopamine and vasopressin are key hormones in regulating social behaviors. Elevated levels of vasopressin V1a receptor (V1aR) was discovered to cause the differences in behavioral differences between the prairie vole and the meadow vole. Dopamine receptors were determined to not differ in the two species, but it is necessary for V1aR modified meadow voles to display partner preferences (Lim et al. 2004).…

According to Nicole King, "Race is a word and a category that can simultaneously denote a person's color, caste, culture, and capacities, oftentimes depending on what historical, political, or social forces are at work". A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry is an attempt to examine the impact of racial discrimination on the life of an ordinary black family. It is also a testament of this family struggling to manage with racism and poverty in the Washington Park Subdivision of Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood. People of all backgrounds lived in America and came to America dreaming of social, educational, economical opportunities as well as political and religious freedoms. During the 1950's achieving the high-quality lifestyle for Black Africans was clearly impossible. The goal of Black Africans was to achieve the quest of the "American Dream".…
