Supervisors Meeting Reflection
I attended a Board of Supervisors meeting on January 22, 2014. It was set to begin at six o’clock in the evening, and I began recording notes at 5:52. Before the start of the meeting a supervisor, Wayne Hazzard, greeted me and my father. At six, when it was slated to begin, Sean Davis banged his gavel to signify it has started. This followed with an invocation and the pledge of allegiance. Before the invocation Aubrey Stanley spoke of two tragedies involving deaths as of late to keep in our prayers. After this, citizen’s time started. Nobody came up to talk about any issues. Wayne Hazzard, however, made an announcement that several Atlee students were present as a requirement for their Government course. He remarked that he hoped they would get what they needed out of the meeting. The agenda was announced to have been amended, indicating that the meeting would be adjourned …show more content…
So, basically the entire meeting was listing off these bills. This was done by Mr. Rives. The first was a school calendar bill that related to the start times of schools. This discussion was about whether or not schools should be able to open before Labor Day, which is prohibited presently to support Virginia’s tourism industry. This is colloquially known as the Kings Dominion Law. The second bill also related to schools in that it would require a school resource officer for every elementary and secondary school. This would be paid for by the Lottery Proceeds Fund. The third bill amended the composition of the Commonwealth Transportation Board by increasing its membership to twenty two members. This would double the representation for Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Northern Virginia. There was some brief debate over how this would impact other locales that would therefore have smaller proportional

The city council meeting could have been interesting if it hadn't dragged on for so long. At first I wasn't sure of what was going on because I couldn't find where they were at on the agenda. I finally found my place when they were doing the announcements and presentations. This part of the meeting took the most time, but I guess it was the most important. They gave six different presentations. The first was a proclamation in recognition of Business Appreciation Week. Four people went up on stage to accept the proclamation and the Pres./ CEO gave a speech. Next was the presentation of a certificate in recognition for Costco Wholesale. The received the BRACE award for "Retail Business of the Year." Dr. Min-Lee Cheng then went up to accept a Proclamation in recognition of "Mosquito and Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week.…

This week I observed the steps you have to take to ensure you meet all your students demands, one way to do so is attend the annual 504 meeting. 504 meetings are intended to provide teachers a place to discuss their student's educational health and plan lessons for the upcoming year. Mrs. Holland was thankful to have attended one in past years, she told me the meeting consisted of similar topics as the PST meeting but more serious. 504 means that the PST solution has failed so the teachers must come up with other ideas. First they begin by discussing the students grades, where they have excelled verses where they have fallen. Then they look for reasoning behind the misunderstanding such as medical, psychological, or physical problems. Then…

The assessment of the neighborhood was completed individually on separate occasions and as a group on our way to a Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meeting. As a group our windshield survey was captured while driving from Northeastern Hospital, west on Allegheny Avenue, and south on Kensington Avenue. The time of the window survey was approximately 5:45 on a warm Tuesday evening. We decided to drive along the smaller side streets after the meeting, in order to get a different view of the community. It was a busy time of the day, many people walking, while others rode bikes to their destinations. The streets were lined with scattered trash, many building stood no longer occupied. Everywhere you looked people were gathered on the sidewalk or sitting on the steps of boarded up storefronts. Some were quenching their thirst from a brown bagged covered bottle. As we pulled up to NA meeting, we sat in the car a few minutes to observe the interaction of the crowd gathered outside of THE LAST STOP which is also a recovery house.…

    City Council Meeting

For my project I visited the Los Alamitos City council. The beginning of the meeting started with a call of order then proceeded to the roll call of the board members. After these steps had taken place the Pledge of Allegiance was said and the meeting began. As each speaker had their turn to speaker about their topic I noticed how democratic it was after a person had given their speech each of the board members voted on the issue and the matter was either passed or declines, it was very similar to direct democracy. Also each speaker was given five minutes which is plenty of time to get your ideas across to the board, and it’s just a long enough time so people don’t get sidetracked or bored. But the only problem that I can see with the five minute rule is if you have too many people speaking at a meeting, not everyone will have their chance to speak. While they’re I noticed that the size of the city council building was a little smaller than expected, because they were unable to sit all the people who attended causing a majority of people to stand in the back during the course of the meeting. There were many issues brought up during the meeting, one of the first issues dealt with the location of Verizon services through Los Alamitos, and the installing and construction that would happen if the city were to install Verizon services. Another important issue that was brought up was the increasing rise in water prices in los Alamitos, which any of the citizens at the meeting talked about and many proposals to the board. An finally one of the Last issues had to deal with trees uprooting sidewalks and roads throughout Los Alamitos that where cased by trees. Out of these three main topics the one that most surprised me was the cracked sidewalks and roads from trees. This most interested me because of the stimulus money that was put into fixing roads in the us has not helped out damaged and pot hole filled roads and sidewalks. These trees should be…

I was a little nervous attending one of these meetings because I didn’t know what to expect but only know from television shows and movies. What is the reality though? I imagined and painted a picture of what an AA meeting would be like. I pictured a room full of people that were obvious addicts, unkept appearances, offensive hygiene and at least one person smelling of alcohol while moving back and forth in the chair. As I entered the room, my perspective laughed at me and as I looked around I was deceived. It was the complete opposite, most of the members of the group were clean, well-kept and looked healthy. I have never been a room full of worried people trying to stay sober because they started the road to sobriety. To keep their…
