SInce all children have different temperaments ranging from easy/flexible, cautious, and sometimes difficult/active, I’ve learned how to address them and in a positive manner as well. In order to achieve a healthy relationship with children we must use clear, simple language, active listening, and set limits for them to develop self-control. ensuring smooth transitions, I found to all be very helpful in learning what is most effective in a classroom and with all types of children.
With the minimal experience I have, I’ve observed cases of children at the Head Start program that have different responses to guidance given by the teacher.
There are some children that are very shy and don’t use their words much until they feel quite comfortable. There are also some cases where a child is overjoyed to have someone giving suggestions and directions. Whatever the case may be, all the children have different reactions to adapting to new things and situations which makes it that much more important to use positive guidance in my opinion. Also, being able to relate what I’ve read to actual experiences has motivated me to try my best and apply what I learn with the
children.
What I most agreed with and could relate to from one of the articles was the mentioning of punishment and its effects. I believe there is a huge difference where positive discipline is most effective on children when the goal is to improve their behavior and it reminds me of past experiences of my own. I can say as child, it did not feel good to be punished and not have an actual explanation told as to why you were being scolded and frowned upon. It didn’t help my confidence or self esteem whatsoever and hurt my feelings too. Also, it made me want to show how I was feeling and do something worse. Frankly, punishment does the opposite of it’s thought purpose.
This all made me think of how important it is to give guidance in the correct manner. Therefore, what stuck out the most to me was reading and learning that the guidance we give children now, will influence their actions in the future. It made me realize our guidance builds a fundamental foundation that will help children develop a strong, healthy self-esteem and independence to carry along with them forever.
