Suren Jamiyanaa's Young Scholars Program
Assessment of applicant as compared with her peers:
Outstanding qualities

Energy
Suren has many activities to juggle during the week, including homework, an extracurricular math team, and some sports activities. Recently, she also became the editor of the school newspaper due to her recognition as a talented writer. Despite this schedule, she is always able to find enough time to practice piano in order to participate and thrive in several piano recitals and competitions each year. Each week she takes an hour-long piano lesson with me late in the evening that often lasts for well over that hour and her attention is still very much focused on the considerable details that we cover. To be able to work with a person like this is a rather uncommon treat for me as a teacher. For this reason, Suren is very inspirational to me.

Integrity
It is obvious to me that Suren is very aware of the need to manage her time, and this also includes pursuits other than her work with me. She always tries her best, even when her piano repertoire is challenging, and she is always open with me about any difficulties she is having. In short, she is consistently straightforward with me, and it is always a given that she will do her best to focus on the task at hand. She always makes the most sincere effort to come to understand and juggle the considerable details I share with her each lesson. Hence, the reason we sometimes go overboard in terms of the length of the lessons. She never comes to a piano lesson unprepared, unless in one way or another she actually has trouble with something. She also never makes up excuses. That is not the way she is.

Self-discipline
Suren is always willing to rise to any task and grow from the experience, always without complaint. Some description of the nature of her self-discipline can be found above, but hard work has always been a part of her life, and this is in a large part due to the way in which she was raised. My Visual Art professor, Victoria Moore is an interesting and established human whose love of the arts got her where she is today. She works at SUNY Brockport full time and is well known in her department. Both the public and I know her to be creative, friendly, and a great teacher. Her work goes beyond the classroom through her own projects and artistic creations. When she is not in the classroom, she is grading papers, preparing new assignments, looking for class examples, responding to emails, ordering supplies, and, her personal favorite, working on her own jewelry and utensil line.…

After she figured out she wanted to teach elementary school she went back to college for her masters in education, a fourteen-month degree. Deaton financed her many years of university by working and living at home to save money, as well as scholarships. Deaton went on to say that any kind of small and personal classes were her most enjoyable. She very much disliked large lecture classes, Econ 150 was an example she used. I finally moved on to asking what inspired her to become a teacher. Deaton’s father is a college professor while her mother is a special education teacher, she said that it was always assumed she would become a teacher. However, it did take her quite a bit of time to come to the same conclusion. I believe it was a mixture of many influences and circumstances. Deaton holds a Post Grad professional license pre-k to general education and a common core vocal music license. I asked her what kind of problems she faced at a student teacher she replied that learning how to control a classroom was the most difficult part. We moved on to present day, Deaton’s favorite things about her job are the many possibilities she can take to make a difference in the students…

Why I deserve to be considered for the South Central Border All-Academics Scholarship is an easy answer, because I plan on continuing to play sports in college including dance and maybe throwing the javelin. Most students would give a heart wrenching explanation, but I go on facts. Fact one; I will be continuing to participate in dance at college. Fact two; academics do not come easy to me and so I have to work extremely hard at it. Fact three; I will work extremely hard to make the school record in javelin by throwing 109 feet. Fact four; I will be a part of dance team in college to help pay for books and tuition in college because I can not afford college otherwise. I go on facts and do not believe in lying so I will tell you that dance and…

Teachers are an essential elements of any society, and although their actions and intention are often positive there are nevertheless scenarios in which they fail at their task. Within ‘Maestro’, Peter Goldsworthy portrays how a teacher can have both positive and negative effects on their pupil, how they can succeed in one element and wane in another. In some respects, Paul Crabbe’s teacher, Eduard Keller, has a devastating effect on his pupil’s life. Due to the maestri’s terrible and tragic past he forces Paul to concentrate on technique and because of his almost fatherly expectations of Paul judges him critically. Although in this case, he can be viewed as the ‘worst possible teacher’ it is also the arrogance of Paul, himself, that culminates in his failures to become a concert pianist. Keller attempts to teach Paul about life where other teachers may simply have swelled Paul’s already arrogant personality and failed to diminish his selfish and egotism: two factors which lead Paul down a patch to his own personalised and ‘dissatisfied’ life.…

In today’s society, a wealth of information is available at all times literally with just the touch of a button. To some, this ease of convenience is a blessing. For those who do not use proper discretion, the convenience is a curse. Due to the abundance of information located on the World Wide Web, students can pick and choose information at their leisure, without ever thinking about whether it is recognized as a scholarly document. With the swiftness that this information age has come upon us, some of our fundamental skills were somehow left behind. According to Russell (2009), a librarian who frequently meets with campus instructors to address any issues they may be having, professors worry that “students lack an understanding of what constitutes good-quality scholarly information” (p.92). In the field of education, particularly early education, teachers must not allow the information literacy to influence scholarship, practice or leadership in a negative manner, but instead embrace the potential information literacy possesses and take full advantage of teaching students a more responsible way to research, analyze, and apply their findings.…

My Jr High choir teacher, Mrs. Bradbury, was the most challenging teacher I have ever had. She would never cut the choir a break, and never stopped pushing us to be our best; “I can’t” was not acceptable to her. I hated her with every fiber of my being, and every time she spoke all I wanted to do was sew her lips together. It wasn’t until the beginning of ninth grade when I realized she was amazing. Once I let my guard down, we instantly connected. Recognizing how much I loved to sing and becoming one of the top singers in my choir was thanks to her. I started working for hours every day on my songs, staying late after class for help, and going to voice lessons. I excelled exponentially and Mrs. Bradbury noticed it.…

On a cold December afternoon, a shy 10 year old waited with her family in a quaint restaurant. She sat nervously wondering if she could play in front of all these people. What if she made a terrible mistake? What if she cried? What if she couldn’t perform? These are the questions that consumed her mind. With encouragement from her mother, the girl hesitantly approached the electric piano. Opening to the page of her first song, she placed her fingers and began her elementary Christmas song. She submerged herself in the music she created. When the song ended, the patrons responded in applause and looked on in wonder at this girl’s talent and ease. At that moment, the young girl realized she wanted to pursue music as a career. For me, that little girl, nothing has changed since.…

Abigail Sin who, age 10, is Singapore's most celebrated young pianist. Sin started reading at age 2, and for the past three years has been ranked among the top 1% in the city-state in an international math competition. She's smart, but it was only through her music that she qualified as a bona fide prodigy. The youngest Singaporean ever to obtain the coveted Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music diploma in piano performance, Sin demonstrates one of the hallmark qualities of the breed: a single-minded drive to excel. Her rage to learn was manifest in her almost unstoppable urge to master the keyboard since she took her first lesson at age 5. "A lot of kids don't like to sit at the piano for hours," says her tutor Benjamin Loh. "Abigail is different. She loves to play, ands she learns extraordinarily fast.”…
