1. What is a computer network?
A computer network consits of a number of computers linked together using special ha`rdware and software to enable them to share computing resources.
2. List four main hardware and three software components on a network. 1. Hardware -Personal computers, mainframes, printers, and navigational control systems. 2. Software - Application software, desktop software, and networking operating systems.
3. Explain two main advantages of networking computers.
- Remote areas can be connected to share information.
- Information can be generated by a single user, and can be shared world wide instantaneously.
4. Distinguish between analog and digital signals. 1. Analog - Real-world signal which varies continuously. 2. Digital - Electrical signal that represents binary information.
5. List the two words that were used to derive the word modem.
- Modulator & Demodulator.
6. Describe the signals modems must handle.
Both analog and digital signals. It is capable of converting digital computer signals to analog transmission signals and vise versa.
7. Explain the difference between serial and parallel transmission.
Serial Transmission - Sends one bit at a time.
Parallel Transmission - Sends several bits at a time.
8. Give one advantage and one disadvantage for parallel transmission.
Advantage - Much faster then a serial transmission.
Disadvantage - Costs are more expensive.
9. Synchronous and asynchronous transmission is based on timing. Explain. Synchronous - A single clock must control the sender and reciever of information in order that they send and recieve data at specified times. Rarely used with modems because synchronizing clocks between two modems is very difficult. Asynchronous - Sends information when available, rather than only when signalled by the recieving modem.
10. State one specific application of synchronous
