1.1 Describe three major schools of management thoughts.
1. Classical schools of management thoughts:- The classical school is the oldest formal school of management thought. Its roots pre-date the twentieth century. The classical school of thought generally concerns ways to manage work and organizations more efficiently. Three areas of study that can be grouped under the classical school are scientific management, administrative management, and bureaucratic management. The classical school (of management) has sought to define the essence of management in the form of universal fundamental functions. These, it was hoped, would form the cognitive basis for a set of relevant skills to be acquired, by all would-be managers through formal education.
In the late 18th century three streams of concepts i.e. bureaucracy, administrative theory and scientific management began to be developed. These concepts have come to be popularly known as classical concepts or classical theories of organizations. The primary contribution of the classical school of management includes:-
Scientific management:- Scientific management is a theory of management that analyzes and synthesizes workflows, improving labour productivity. The core ideas of the theory were developed by Frederick Taylor believed that decisions based upon tradition and rules of thumb should be replaced by precise procedures developed after careful study of an individual at work. Its application is contingent on a high level of managerial control over employee work practices. The advantages of scientific management are as follows:
