This should cover it.” and handed us two crisp dollar bills. We got the skittles and returned to our seats. Lexi took the shiny change, jiggled it in her hands and put it back into her wallet. “ Do you wanna come with us back in the locker room with us, Lexi?”, Chase asked. “No thanks.”, Lexi replied most likely because of the group of teenage boys that seemed “too cool for school” who strolled in way too late. Chase ignored them and jumped down step to step, somewhat in a hurry. I followed her down into the locker room running my fingers across the braille once more. The locker room was in some way a mysterious place full of wonders eight year olds never knew existed. We played childish games throughout the locker room. Whenever someone came in we pretended we were washing our hands, holding back laughter. Around the beginning of the fourth quarter, Chase and I started playing truth or dare. “ Charlie, I dare you to get in one of the lockers.” I got up fearlessly, opened a locker, and got in…

The clock ticks away, eating every little second that they need to spare. Tapping is coming from the front row and an ear busting scraping of erasers on paper comes from the back. Looking around, one may see faces of various emotions, those laid back or relaxed, those who are more concentrated on their own work, too much so that they don’t notice the person cheating off of them, and those who are looking at every question and realising that their future is coming slowly to an end solely because of a test. The clock’s unforgiving and unknowing hands dance around in circles, claiming the time until it is gone. As the children pass up the papers, they cannot fathom how much weight they had in their hands. Once the paper leaves their fingers, their future will soon be decided.…

He glanced over at her cot, though—it was already made, her linen nightgown folded neatly on the end. She obviously was up for the day already. It was past the darkest part of night, but before the pre-dawn crow of the roosters. It would still be too dark to see very far ahead along the street. He reached for the candle holder set on the small window ledge for late night calls of nature, but it was already gone. Darling’s fifth grade class. Over the summer I had asked every PME friend of mine if they were in Mr. Darling’s class and every response was no. I walked into the room with shaky knees and sweaty hands. The constant thump from my butterflies flying around in my stomach would not diminish. As I stepped foot into the classroom and gazed upon my new classmates I couldn’t help but realize, I know roughly ten kids in this class. This couldn’t possibly be my class, there was no way they would stick a Pine Meadow student into a classroom overpowered with Oak Ridge Students. I sat down in a fury, steam effusing out of my ears. The first half of the day idled by painstakingly slow, I played icebreaker after icebreaker unable to make new friends due to my unwilling attitude. I told myself it was going to be the worst year of my life and it had only been three hours of class.…

A loud ring went off as the minute hand had finally landed on six. It was half past seven now as little Timmy jumped out of bed and scurried downstairs. Once he approached the dining room, he found out his mom had made him his favorite breakfast, bacon and eggs. He ate quickly to ensure that he would not be late for his first class. Once he was done, he walked quickly to another room with shelves full of books and a chalkboard. He did not bother changing into different clothes or packing his book bag. As he sat down on one of the chairs his mother greeted him, "Good morning, please open your book to page forty seven". His school day had just begun.…
