On a trip to the north in 1947 Mary Sive learned the meaning of segregation and racism when she realized that the point of it all was to loom over every aspect of life and make everything more difficult for a colored person no matter how trivially small the matter was. A little over fifty years ago this policy still existed and people of different races were unable to drink from the same water fountain as white people.
