UMass Boston is a nationally recognized university and has become a model for many public urban universities. It has been growing and expanding in great fashion for the past several years. It has a student body of 16,000 students comprised of undergraduates and graduates. There are 100 undergraduate and 50 graduate programs offered in eight colleges throughout the university.
With such a huge structure comes a significant responsibility from the IT Department. The IT Department of UMass Boston, also known as the Information Technology Services Division, aims to provide comprehensive IT solutions to all departments. The CIO states their mission is “…to forward the university's strategic goals, enhance learning, enable scholarly endeavors, and support effective institutional management.”
Technology Enhanced Classrooms
The IT Department in UMass Boston has placed great importance on educational technology. More than 100 classrooms throughout the university are “Technology Enhanced Classrooms.” The classroom technologies provide a range of services and equipment to the students, staff, and faculty related to the usage of instructional technology. Besides in-class activities, the technology provides multimedia support for non-class activities such as seminars and conferences. The Classroom Technology Support group works under the Educational Technology and Learning Commons section and is a part of the Media Department (see the whole organizational chart in Appendix 1) – it is responsible for handling the maintenance and usage problems associated with classroom technologies.
There are two types of TEC’s on the campus: Level 1 and Level 2. Level 2 is more advanced compared to the Level 1 type and includes additional features. A typical Level 1 TEC has:
-Data/video projector
-Projection screen
-VHS video playback
-DVD video playback
-Audio amplifier with stereo speakers
-Wall mounted control panel
-Cable for connecting
