Tadashi Suzuki
Tadashi Suzuki is an acclaimed director and writer of theater who is known for his creation of the “Suzuki Method of Actor Training”. Tadashi Suzuki’s method is based out of Toga, Toyama Japan where he founded the Suzuki Company of Toga. Tadashi Suzuki’s method is one that is based from the acting styles of Noh and Kabuki which are originated from Japan and focus mostly on physicality and control. Suzuki’s method also stems from the theatre from Ancient Greece which Suzuki found as a parallel to Japanese theatre.
Tadashi Suzuki’s objective in being a director were ones of completely changing the way theatre is taught through the way of Japanese theatre. Suzuki takes a more “Eastern” approach to his method of acting through the connection of nature, the world, and the human body. His exercises which are the essences of his method, are focused on putting the body through physical extremes which in turn will develop into mastery of control of the body after years of practice. Suzuki’s method can be analogous to playing sports or exercises. Over time with both sports and this method, one will develop over time and get stronger with longer lasting stamina.
Summing up Tadashi Suzuki’s Method, Theatre starts from the ground. Learning to work harmoniously with the ground will be the basis of having control over the body.Suzuki also believes that having a connection to nature is very important in acting. He calls this connection ‘animal energy’. According to Suzuki, one can tap into ‘animal energy’ through the orientation of the feet and its relationship to the ground. Suzuki also pays close attention to spatial relationship within the given space and making a connection between it and the actor. These philosophies go hand and hand with exercises Suzuki teaches and require strong imagination and visualization.
