Tag Body Spray
Article Analysis In the article I have chosen to analyze, it is promoting “Tag Body Spray” for men in ESPN magazine. It is set up with a man on the ground, his shirt ripped and his belt is undone, and five women, in short-skirts and low-cut shirts with an open lab coat over them. The scene seems to take place in a laboratory where the five women appear as researchers with their lab coats and clipboards. The researchers are over the man, pinning him down with their feet in a somewhat sexual pose. In the lower right-hand corner of the image, there is a want ad that says “Wanted: Testees”, “Can you hang? Looking for replacement testees to trail Tag product. Must be willing to work under the hottest conditions.” This article perpetuates the American myth that if you buy and wear a certain product, women will want you. There are three ways to analyze an article; seeing the big picture or understanding what the advertiser is saying, observing the characteristics of the image to understand all aspect of the ad, and interpreting the meaning of the image to realize what the advertiser is really promoting.
When looking for the big picture, there are a number of things to consider such as the source of the image, the prominent element, and the focal point of the image. The source in this image is the man in the center of the five women because the product is for him, the male. The purpose of the image is to attract to you the ad so you will see what has happened to the man to convince you to buy the product so women will want you. The audience of this image would be teenage and men in their twenties. By looking at the want ad, the viewer can tell that the ad is directed toward men by the comment the want ad says, “Wanted: Testees”. Most men who read ESPN magazine are in their late teens and twenties. The prominent element that immediately may attract the viewers attention is the five women in the center of the picture. They are all standing in a sexual pose over the man

Lewis argues that this advertisement “blatantly uses stereotypes” (p. 179) to appeal to society’s decided gender roles and it gravely influences consumers to strive to fit in to those roles. She explains throughout her essay that we have been categorized into these roles over many generations that portray men to be hard, violent, “power incarnate” (p. 179), with no expression of weakness. Women are seen as being unintelligent, overly sensitive, sexual and innocent beings that must obey men. Lewis announces that this ad conveys the message that in order for a man to be “hard and powerful” or a woman to be “sexually intense and desirable” (p.180) they must be dressed in Fila jeans. She contends that there is a powerful sexual theme underlying the message conveyed in this advertisement.…

Commercials are always targeting specific audiences with certain angles or visuals in the ad, for example, the Old Spice Company is a male deodorant and body wash producer but in this commercial the spokesperson is trying to convince women that they want their men to wear Old Spice. This is a classic example of a social advertisement that further falls into the category of opinion leader. The main character in the advertisement is portrayed as a manly man who is what most men want to become thereby determining that the target market for this advertisement is men. In the YouTube video there are many segments linked together but all by the same main character who fulfills what most consumers seek, and that is – an opinion that eliminates the tedious search process that is filled with uncertainty. These ads prompted me to buy Dos Aquis once and boy, did I feel like an interesting man…

Call it hunkvertising. The objectification of men in advertising (as with women) is not new. Consider icons like the Marlboro Man and Old Spice’s sexy pitchman Isaiah Mustafa. And yet, a disproportionate number of buff, often-shirtless studs are lately popping up in ads for everything from salad dressing to air fresher-in other words, consumer products not normally associated with sexual imagery. As ever, sex sells-even the hirsute sex,…

In regards to the article, "Men's Men and Women's Women",Craig explains to the reader how advertisements and commercials use gender roles,in order to attract the gender audience they desire. Therefore, he demonstrates that there is four categories that identify these types of audiences. For instance, there is men's women this category targets men attracted by women, men's men's are influenced by mens their selves, women's women are women who influence one another, and women's men are men who attract women. As Craig mentioned in his article, "The ads carefully crafted bundles of images, frequently designed to associate the product with feelings of pleasure stemming from deep-seated fantasies and anxieties." For that reason, advertisers manipulate…

These scenes from the advertising world, and like most of the advertising, they sell more specific than our products. Indeed, sell their needs and desires. In hidden behind advertising information are about each of us want to be successful, physically attractive, even sexy. Very often we see women depicted in advertisements wearing very little and trying to seduce the men even though their target market is women. What is the purpose of targeting men with beautiful women, when you are not trying to sell them anything? Simple, it creates an image of what you are supposed to look like to be attractive to a man. Victoria Secret’s commercials constantly do this with women who come out strutting down the runway with one of those looks that says you “Feast on me, I’m here to be looked at, my body is for your eyes.” (Bordo 191) Bordo uses this quote as she describes the young man in the Calvin Klein ad who without being forward about it portrays an image of sexuality. This is contrary to most of the images we usually see and Bordo describes this in an interesting way as she says “His body isn’t a stand-in phallus; rather he has a penis.”…

A wide variety of advertisements have been creating numerous images of men and women for years now regarding gender roles and sex diversity. The advertising industry in particular has formed the impression that “sex sells,” now using women’s bodies as sex objects (Ford, 2008). Previous research has shown men are being outnumbered when it comes to women being sexualized. More importantly, the advertising industry has shown what the “accurate” gender roles for men and women are to be. Men are to be dominant, tough, strong, independent, and detached. Contrastingly, women are to be dependent, loving mothers and wives, concerned with beauty, and emotional. This literature review will look at the ways magazine advertisements portray objects and figures,…

    Men on Display

Susan Bordo describes the ways men can alter an advertisement, and how the way they dress and behave in the advertisement can change the perception of them. Some advertisements that centers around men are used for the sole purpose of exuding sex appeal. Campaigns advertising products such as cologne and fashion use this approach abundantly, mainly to get people’s attention. When men are illustrated this way, it is much more controversial because men are perceived more in a feminine way. As Susan Bordo states, “It is feminine to be on display” (Bordo, 135). Males exuding femininity is not completely accepted in today’s culture because of the stereotype that men should be authoritative and burly men. This approach was used in the Gucci Underwear advertisement that Bordo described in her first chapter. Other ways that an advertisement can showcase a man is by perceiving them as “heterosexual” (Bordo, 145) and a stereotypical burly man. When males are perceived as manly men in an advertisement it appeases to a more homophobic group of people. Bordo believes that it should be just as accepted in todays culture for men to be the center of sexual and risky ads just like it is for women.…

Women, beauty, sex, money--they may seem like completely unrelated words but when combined together create a powerful driving force within American society. This “driving force” is known as media, though, in this essay, I will be focusing mainly on advertisements. There are a variety of ads being made everyday and can be spotted almost everywhere; billboards, magazines, shops, and even online, just to name a few. However, many of these ads--ranging from food to fashion--have began involving women in them. Not just any women either; these women are the idealized women American society has conceptualized as they flaunt their bodies whilst also implying sexual themes. Individuals, literally and figurative, by into the way these advertisements…

This image uses a medium shot so the audience can concentrate on his torso (mainly his abs) which highlights his superiority and dominance over the woman. The tight cropping and framing of the shot makes the mise en scene appear more personal and full of sexual tension. The medium shot also shows the pink-hued background/location which reflects the colour of the cologne bottle being advertised. The purpose of this is to make the product stand out and draws the viewer’s eye to the narrative of the image. The focus is on the man and the woman behind him and also the product but the audience is mainly drawn to the man’s torso and the product. The man shows dominance in the advert due to representation of the woman behind him; she looks almost hungry for him. Her sexual desire and longing are portrayed by her pouting and parted mouth and by using a suggestive facial expression that is looking directly at the man. Alternatively, the man is giving a direct gaze to the audience. His indifference to her suggests his emotional power over her. The representation of the woman’s submissive and lustful position in the advert…

The context and environment of this ad is very crucial in understanding the intended target audience. The placement in an upscale, health and lifestyle magazine considerably narrows the target audience. According to Rodale Press, publishers of the Men's health, the target audience is of the magazine is "upscale young men, guys who are in their 30s, married or single, living an urban lifestyle and very conscious about their looks and health." Based on this definition, we can be clear that the ad is targeting upscale, health conscious men in their late 20's through mid 40's.…

An advertisement for Guiseppe Zanotti’s line Vicini portrays of a woman’s body stuffed in the trunk of a car with just her limp legs dangling lifelessly out of the back. A Dolce & Gabbana advertisement depicts a young women being pinned to the ground and a group of males towering around her insinuating an imminent gang rape. A Valentino layout shows a strong, stern man gripping the jaw of a beautiful woman. A 2008 Duncan Quinn advertisement was somehow supposed to be selling men 's suits by depicting a strangled, bloody, half-naked woman lying on a car. All were almost instantly labeled extremely offensive, incredibly sexist, and evidently violent. These types of degrading advertisements have made their way into our mainstream media and fill the pages of popular magazines. Jean Kilbourne explains the effects of these advertisements and the dehumanizing of women’s bodies in her essay “Two Ways a Women Can Get Hurt: Advertising and Violence.” She explains how…

The media tends to represent women in society in a limited number of ways. In a typical TV slot the ads will consist of Males being independent, hard working class men. The women on the other hand are portrayed as carers, nurtures and above all looking after there families. They are always captured behind a stove cooking something for the family with a big cheesy grin on there face. Unlike males, women in advertising only have 3 main categories in which they can be represented. They are Domestic, Sex object and Beauty. Many women are used in advertisements to sell items for the home or body. These products are purposely depicted to enhance one's beauty and by doing this, the woman seems to be more in control of herself and the world around her.…
