Tangerine Character Analysis
According to Stephan R. Covey “while we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose our consequences of our actions.” Tangerine by: Edward Bloor was about this boy name Paul Fisher moving to Tangerine, Florida where he learned to face his fears about his brother Erik. The character in the story that had the biggest impact on Paul was Erik. First of all, Erik knocked out Tino, Erik and Arthur killed Luis, and finally he was the reason for Paul’s eye problems. First, Erik got into a fight with Tino and knocked him out. On page 205, paragraph 6, it states “Erik lashed out smashing the back of his hand across Tino’s face, smashing him so hard that Tino spun half way around in the air and landed on the grass.” What’s important here …show more content…

On page 263, paragraph 7, it states, “I turned around and saw Vincent Castor. He was holding a can of spray paint. Then I felt Erik grab me from behind, easily pinning both of my arms with just one of his. I could hear my voice crying, “I didn’t tell! I didn’t tell!” And I remember Erik’s finger prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them…” when Paul spoke up to mom and dad about Erik spray painting Paul’s eyes he became brave. It made him confident, enough so he could have the courage to tell about Erik’s wrong doings. My evidence is on page 284, paragraph 2, it states “I couldn’t listen to anymore of this. I shouted, “he belonged up there!’ Arthur’s father turned to see who had said this. I went on, “he belonged up there as much as you and your stupid kid do.” I looked at the blond deputy. “The weapon that he used to kill Luis Cruz was a blackjack.” What this evidence explains is that Paul took charge to say that Erik and Arthur had killed Luis. As a result we can tell that Erik made the biggest choice that impacted Paul the most. In the beginning of the story Paul was dead afraid of Erik and his harmful violence. Erik’s violence caused a lot of damage to loved ones and relationships that were very important to Paul. What important here is that Paul overcame his fear about his brother and was brave enough to tell the truth about Erik so nobody else would get hurt. To conclude, we may never be able to control the choices of others, but we can always choose our own choices- avoiding

In conclusion, the different connections the characters have together makes the novel even more powerful than it already is. Paul has at least one connection to every character in the book but the men who knew each other before the war, the man that Paul killed out of instinct, and the brothers in combat are the most significant to the novel. Erik Fisher previously slapped Tino Cruz, Luis’ younger brother, across the face. Luis Cruz purposefully enraged Erik for revenge for Tino by taunting, “You would smack a little kid in the face, right? Why don’t you come over here and try to smack me” (211)? Luis’ provocation caused Erik to order Arthur to whack a blackjack across Luis’ head. This caused the aneurysm (weakness in a blood vessel) in Luis’ head to further weaken and burst, causing a massive stroke, ultimately leading to Luis’ death. Once Luis died, Paul pondered, “The truth about Luis is obvious to all of the people around him… They know what really happened… Why would that seem so mysterious to me” (249)? While reflecting, Paul came across his reality. He was living in “bits and pieces of the truth” (249), while everyone else “know what really happened” (249). Paul’s reflection indicates that he has realized the truth, that he was living in lies while others were not. Luis’ decision to provoke Erik caused Paul to reflect and uncover the truth of his…

One character’s choice and consequence affected Paul’s development by either hurting, scaring, helping, teasing, or encouragement. The relationship between Paul and Erik, was not very friendly. For example, “Suddenly I felt the hot breath of a predator on my neck. I screamed in terror. Erik laughed and ran over to Mom and Dad” (Bloor 168). Erik likes to scare Paul all the time and finds it amusing. This makes Paul visualize him as a jerk. As for Paul’s way of living, “And I remembered Erik’s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them” (Bloor 263-264). Erik and Vincent Castor were the reason Paul went blind; the reason why Paul has to wear the goggles. Erik hurts not only Paul, but other people too. “Immediately,…

That important thing is to not be naive about how white men will continue to discriminate and to be careful about what you say and do around them. Throughout the novel, Paul struggles with the meaning of family and, even more specifically, the meaning of brother. In Paul's world, family ties and heritage is very important in understanding someone's past history, someone's social situation, what someone can expect from life, and for whom someone can depend. Initially, Paul sees his white brother Robert as his closest friend, and most reliable ally. As Paul comes of age, he grows to see that race takes over the tie of a brotherly relationship that unites the two boys. Shortly after his break with Robert, Paul became more close with Mitchell, and considered him as a brother, as they their shared racial heritage and their shared struggles forge a bond between the two that is stronger than the bond that had connected Paul and Robert. Paul and Mitchell trust and depend upon each other because they must. Neither could have escaped particular dangerous situations without the other and when Paul asks Mitchell to work the land with him, even their everyday lives become more and more related for them to be required to have each other. Mitchell replaces Robert in Paul's childhood dream of working the land with his brother. There is also one additional theme that is conveyed…

Mr. and Mrs. Fisher should have told Paul the truth from the beginning so Paul would not have hated himself for about 13…
