Taylor Swift Commercials
The Taylor Swift / Apple Music ad campaign, first released on April 1st, consists of various commercials featuring the award-winning singer. The first ad features Swift preparing for a jog on her treadmill. She puts on headphones and uses her phone to turn on the song “Jumpman” by Drake and Future. The rap song begins to play as she starts her run, and Swift begins to rap the song enthusiastically. With her arms flailing, she raps her way through half of the first verse. In mid-stride, she falls torso-first onto the treadmill as the belt carries her to the floor. Another ad featuring Swift was released on April 18th. This ad, titled “Ready to Go Out” has her lip-synching in a mirror to “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World. Nothing eventful happens in this one, it just features her singing and dancing in a mirror.

This campaign could not work without the adoption of technology, for technology is the reason for the ad. Streaming is an up-and-coming service, and is quickly destroying music consumption and purchasing as we know it. Also, would it be funny if Taylor Swift fell outside? Yes, but less so. The treadmill technology provides an extra comic edge for the commercial’s memorability.
This campaign could not work featuring an average person, or an unknown celebrity. Who would care if rapped a song on a treadmill and fell? This ad takes full advantage of Taylor Swifts’ popularity among millennials, the target audience for streaming services, and her conceived public image to create a commercial that makes people talk. The treadmill ad currently has 72 thousand retweets on Twitter and made headlines around the country upon release. Say what you will about Taylor Swift, but this ad was a perfect way to advertise Apple Music.

The producers of this commercial knew its target audience and went after it. It had a strong attention getter. Right from the beginning this commercial had my attention and maintained it throughout the entirety of the advertisement. It had strong appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos. This commercial worked for me, but for others I can see how this commercial came up short in getting their attention. For example, my views towards the music choice, the girl, and scenery corresponded well with what I wanted to see, but if you asked my mother about the commercial I’m sure there would be a completely different reaction to the commercial. In fact when I was watching the commercial in class in preparation for writing this analysis the girl who sits behind me watched the commercial over my shoulder and said that she thought the commercial was “ stupid”. It wasn’t until this moment that I realized the importance of pathos, ethos, and logos and how different each person’s appeals truly…

The commercial starts out with a young boy in a tuxedo staring at himself when his mother comes in the room wearing a tan shirt, complimenting how good he looks. The boy rolls his eyes and shows a look of disapproval. The mother notices that her son is feeling upset, so she tells him to not feel bad, and that many students go to prom by themselves, but from the kitchen, his little sister who is coloring at the table replies, “no they don’t.” The mother fixes her son’s black bowtie as he makes his way towards the front door. As he grabs the door handle, his father comes from the other room and calls for his son. When the boy turned around, the father tossed him his car keys to a silver 2013 Audi S6. The boy catches them with one hand, and shows a look of shock. His father then tells him to have fun tonight with a nod of approval.…

They have a cute, heart-warming Labrador puppy as the main character, and they know it will appeal to the emotions of nearly all the viewers. Also, they included a beautiful, majestic Clydesdale horse that will gain the attention of horse lovers and many others. When showing the video in class and at home, the relationship between the adorable dog and the horse had a powerful impact on the emotions of the women viewers. As the commercial was playing, women and men could be heard murmuring and making affectionate sound effects at the sight of the animals. Additionally, they used a handsome young man as the rancher which increases the physical appearance and lures even more females. Music is another factor that Budweiser employs in the commercial to lull the audience. Depending on the commercial, song choice is crucial to help convince the viewers or convey a message. For this advertisement, Budweiser chose to play “Let Her Go” by Passenger (Clevver). This song is perfect for the message shown in the commercial, and it has some sad lyrics and audio to display the dejected look of the puppy and the horse as their friendship is hindered. The song states, “Only hate the road when you’re missing home” (Clevver). These lyrics tie in exceptionally with the actions in the advertisement because the dog wants his home to be in the stable with the horses. The video is timed strategically so that the beat picks up as the horses are chasing the car and getting their friend back. The commercial is shot on a professional level with expert directors and camera operators. All commercials from large enterprises in the Super Bowl are filmed…
