Memories

My earliest memories of writing were when I was like 5 or 6 years old. I was in second grade at my school called “Franciscanas”. I was very young I remember my mom and dad helping me with everything at home, the only thing I knew how to write was my name other than that I did not know how to write anything else. After I started my second grade class I remember I could write a lot more, and that is how my earliest memories of writing began. I also started reading when I was like 6 or 7 years old. I remember that my dad had some cards with letters like “ CA, LA, SA, LO” and many more, after I started reading the little flash cards, he started putting a lot more together so they would become a word and that is how I remember I started my reading. To me they were great experiences because it taught me a lot, imagine me without knowing how to read and write, I would not be able to be here today. I am glad I had my mom, my dad, and my school teachers to teach me how to read and write. As always you know that we at all times get upset or have a negative thought when we can do what we try, so for me it was a little bit of both a negative and a positive experience but overall it was a positive experience because I finally got to read and write how I was supposed to. The only thing that has changed is that I have gotten better every day and I learn from each mistake I

The English 3003 class has helped me in various ways in improving and shaping my writing skills. Although some of the work were tedious and sometimes frustration at times, but overall it was a fun class to be in and was a great learning experience as well. I had to take this class not because I failed to secure an 8 in the WST test but because I had problems mainly due to my poor writing. Throughout the class this quarter I experienced many methods and different types of writings and essays. The writing homework took time, and several ideas and sometimes google searches to make it a good essay I can score marks on, but in return, I learned skills and techniques…

Most people cannot recall their very first experience with reading or writing. However, the majority of people can recall the moment in their lives where the way they viewed reading or writing changed drastically. The pivotal moment that truly alters how one views the written word seems to be engrained in one’s memory. When someone chooses to write down and share their journey with reading and writing, whether it be discovering it or redefining it to themselves, they create a literacy narrative.…

I never used to write. In fact, I didn’t much like it. Little did I know that writing would become obsolete and a physiological requirement for the well being of my life. From an early age on all I did was read. I grew up in an isolated environment where books were my escape, and escape was necessary from the hardships of home. I remember being a young seven-year-old boy wearing a pillowcase around my neck fastened with a pen. I was eating animal crackers at the time, and my step dad was calling out for me. I stood up from my crouched position and raised my hand as I learned from pre-school, and said, “ I’m here daddy.” At that moment my step father grabbed me by the cape harshly compressing my trachea purposefully, shaking me back and forth with his hands around my neck as I began to choke on the appetizing cracker animal crumbs within the back of my throat. I didn’t understand at the time what was really going on. My mother came out of the room and my dad acted as if nothing happened and told me to…

Sitting on a colorful rug and listening to my pre-kindergarten teacher, who happened to be my aunt, read books from Dr. Seuss was first memory of learning to read. She would read word by word slowly and show us what she was reading and of course she would show off the pictures. She finished reading and now we are sitting at our tiny tables learning how to write alphabet and numbers. Those are the first memories I have of learning to read and write.…

My early literacy experience was not a big of a deal for me at an early age. When I was in school I always took a reading and writing course with a grain of salt, it was just one more class on my schedule. Literature did not really appeal to me in my early experience. I always think that why do I need to take a literature course in order for me to succeed in the future.…

Writing is a way to express oneself and provide knowledge to the reader. Different forms of writing include poems, journals, and essays. However, over my years of being in school, writing has seemed to be an un-bearable chore to me. I didn’t grow as a writer and never will either.…

It has been a long time since I learned to read and write. I grew up in a small town middle of nowhere in Brazil, and I lived in a coffee farm until I was 12 years old. My parents were very simple and uneducated, who lived life to work. I started school at 1st grade level (no kindergarten that time) when I was 6 years old. I don’t remember if I knew any reading or numbers, I think I didn’t know anything about reading and writing. I learned all that in the school. I remember that I learned the alphabet first, then the sounds of the letters, the different sounds of combined letter, consonants, and vowels. Then I started to learn some mixed vowels and consonants, then words. My teacher was nice but she was very strict. When she was in bad mood…

The reason for school is to get an education. But what is that? Some say to get a better career and make more money or become smarter in general. But the main reason that school was invented was to teach children to read and write. That is it. After students were able to read and write then came the math, history, and science. Growing up I loved learning how to read and write, but to a certain degree. After I got pretty good at reading and writing, which I’d say took until 4th grade to be able to write essays well and read at a high level, teachers would assign reading and writing assignments on the stupidest subjects. For an example cursive writing was the biggest waste of energy I…

Throughout my life writing has been very difficult. As a kid a speech impediment impaired my ability to learn to read properly. Because I struggled at reading, I also struggled at writing. In elementary school I went to a special class during lunch to learn how to read and write better. In middle school I went to after school help, but my writing skills always seemed to slip behind the level of the students around me.…

    How I Learned to Read

Finally the day came and it was time for me to go to school. I was scared; I did not know where I was, and I did not know a single word in English. There was no way my mom would stick me in an English classroom. They moved me to a Spanish one; there I had a more clear idea of what I was learning. The teacher was a sweet, calm lady; she had patience with my wiggly and off place writing, to this day I have not figured out whether she understood it or not. Once I learned my ABC’s here came the small words of animals and things like for example “oso” which means bear in Spanish. Learning to read and write seamed so boring. I had to sit down and do homework which required my attention, but I preferred to draw and play. Learning was torture; I would read very slowly, even when I tried to read those small picture books for small kids, I was useless by that time.…

My writing process has always been a frustrating one. I like writing, but I don't think I'm very good at it. When I was younger, I loved letting my creative side shine by writing silly stories and pretending I was Stephen King, using words that I didn't even understand. My dad read me Shel Silverstein's books of poems and and drawings. Those books inspired me so much to write and to draw and be creative on a blank sheet of paper.…
