Team Collapse at Richard, Wood, Hulme, LLP EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
SITUATION ANALYSIS
Established in 1998 by Chris Richard, Gemma Wood and Lauren Hulme, Richard, Wood and Hulme LLP (“RWH”) is a financial services firm offering audit and taxation services to its clients with a mission of delivering excellent service and improving clients’ internal controls. Being a “team player” is an essential trait of a RHW employee because client audits are completed by teams. The client fee is flat, so the more efficiently and effectively the team members’ work, the higher the margins the firm realizes. The firm does not tolerate those with poor teamwork behaviors as evidenced by the fact that RWH has terminated only a handful of employees since the firm’s inception, and those terminations were mainly because those individuals were not able to work effectively in teams.
The case is set in the Fall of 2008 at the height of the North American financial crisis and at a time when some of RWH’s clients are filing for bankruptcy and others are demanding reductions in audit fees. During this difficult economic time, RWH is opting to maintain existing staffing levels and as a result is losing money. However, RWH views an event scheduled to occur in 2011, the conversion of Canadian financial reporting standards from GAAP to IFRS, as an attractive business opportunity and wants to maintain its current staffing level to take advantage of this future opportunity.

The majority of Patrick Lencioni's work The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is a fictionalized account of a very typical management challenge. The fictitous company is DecisionTech, a 150 person software start-up in Silicon Valley. The company, thanks to the efforts of Jeff the company's firstCEO, is well funded and staffed with top level executives. However, the company is lagging behind several competitors and the board has replaced Jeff with Kathryn. Kathryn immediately begins a careful review of the situation and determines that the senior management team isn't much of a team at all. Utilizing a series of exercises and off-site meetings, Kathryn begins an aggressive team building (and team thinning). She opens ever meeting of her direct reports with the following speech:…

Harrison (1999), explains the dynamic process of decision making as a complex process, full of information, detours, uncertainty, fuzziness, and conflict. Though most decisions made in corporate America do not nearly reach the pinnacle of the decisions made by world leaders during the missile crisis, it still needs to be reviewed as a process we should understand if we are to make appropriate decisions as leaders in our own right.…

All hero journeys begin with the departure. Here the hero will encounter a call to adventure and become aware of a certain problem, leaving the world they are used to. The hero will experience feelings of fear and perhaps refuse to find a solution to the problem. They will have to overcome this fear in order to take the next step towards reaching a psychological transformation. Overcoming their fear will sometimes be assisted by some sort of mentor or a supernatural aid. Stories like The Iliad and The Epic of Gilgamesh have examples of heroes that undergo these steps. In The Iliad, Achilles leaves his home in Greece to serve in the Trojan War as his call to adventure. He refuses to go to war because he was afraid…

In some way or another, all firms use teams in order to complete tasks that need collaboration between individuals. Brickley, Smith & Zimmerman (2009), note that “teams are formed because they are more successful at assembling specialized knowledge for decision making than are alternative methods that might be used to pass the knowledge through the traditional hierarchy” (p.504). While working in teams can be a great way to get tasks and goals completed more efficiently, if not managed correctly, teams can become dysfunctional. Some of the main reasons that teams fail is due to misaligned reward and performance evaluation systems, lack of setting performance benchmarks or setting erroneous performance benchmarks, and poor performance evaluation systems.…
