Tears of Joy
I came across a picture the other day that took me back to an unforgettable and very eventful day. It was a picture taken after a horse show of the horse that I had saved my money for years to purchase. I had been showing horses and participating in rodeos my whole life with my Mom being a huge influence. She was and still is a horse trainer and breeder. I wanted a horse that I could purchase with my money, train, and show without the help of my Mom. That horse came about in 2000. She was a two year old paint mare named GEE TEE Dunn It. I immediately began training her for competition. It took years of determination, and sometimes frustration, to get her ready to compete. We finally got our day to show off everything we had worked so hard for. It was the first horse show I entered as the rider, handler, and owner. The big day was April 10, 2004. I couldn’t fall asleep the night before. My nerves and anxiety were getting to me. When I finally did fall asleep it was in the early morning. And, as luck goes I slept right through my alarm. I was supposed to be up and ready in the barn loading my tack into the trailer at 7 a.m. Unfortunately, I did not wake up until 7:45 a.m. I jumped out of bed, grabbed my clothes, my show gear, and ran out the door. I completely forgot to brush my hair or teeth. The drive to the barn seemed to take forever. It seemed I hit every red light on the way. I was about to call my Mom and tell her I would be late, but decided not to. I would just have to face the wrath of being late when I got there. When I arrived at the barn I stepped out of my truck and took a moment to catch my breath. The air was still cool and crisp from the light rain shower the night before. There were people rushing around trying to get their horses ready for the show. As I was looking around I heard “Brittany Nicole! Get over here!” my mom had spotted me. With my head hung down I walked quickly to where she was standing, which was right in the middle of the barn

During my junior year in high school I visited the oncology area at St. Christopher's hospital for children with the Quilt for Kids a nonprofit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of children who suffer from abuse or life threatening illnesses. Oncology is the study and treatment of tumors such as cancer. The volunteers made quilts for the kids for support and comfort during their recovery. I made two-horse stuffed animals instead of a quilt, I wanted them to hold on to something while they went to a difficult process. I made a chestnut-brown horse color, with hazel eyes, and light-colored hair. The other horse was a dun horse with tannish tint, with brown eyes and dark long hair. This experience had an emotional impact on me it…

I grew up riding at my parents’ horse barn in Bozeman, Montana. I started riding when I was three and continued until I was jumping cross country jumps by age eleven. When I was old enough I started to learn how to jump and once I got the hang of it I was in love. Bigger, higher, faster, whatever I could jump I would. In September of 6th grade, my first year in middle school, I competed in my first big Three Day Event horse show in Missoula, Montana. My horse Sunny and I had a great performance, nailing all our jumps. My family owned Sunny for a little…

It had been a crazy morning as I ran all over my house trying to find my jacket and boots. My mom had been admitted into the hospital that morning for a massive headache and all I could think about was whether or not she would be okay. I took her to the emergency room that day before so going to class was the last thing on my mind. My father and sister had agreed to stay with her till I ended class so I was more at ease knowing she wouldn’t be alone. After running all over my house looking for my things I quickly gathered myself to make my train. I finally got to Penn Station with four minutes to spare. I quickly walked to where the rest of my class was as we waited for instructions to where we would…

It was late at night, the wind was blowing, the storm was raging, and the power was out. Everyone in my house was in the basement bailing water, or holding flashlights so the people bailing could see where the water laid. Suddenly, the phone starts to ring, I run upstairs to get it. It was Shayanna. She had called to tell me that I had made the part of Susan in the play if I was interested. I went and got my mom, who was sopping up water with some towels at the time, and told her that Shayanna wanted me to play the part of Susan, and that Shayanna would like to talk to her.…
