We would constantly color together in coloring books, and make friendship bracelets and necklaces out of blush and lavender plastic beads. My Grandma Vita was engulfed by an abundance of in the stress midst of her last pregnancy. Case in point, by that time she had three children, her father was a recovering alcoholic, and her mother was astonishingly ill. She had been battling pneumonia for years. In turn, the stress lead her to smoke throughout Aunt Dori’s trimesters. Therefore, my aunt was born two months premature. The NICU physicians knew Aunt Dori would have some complications, but it was her underdeveloped lungs that caused major problems. The day after she was delivered, she stopped breathing. As a result of the deprivation of oxygen to her brain, pieces of her cerebellum, part of the brain that controls the regularity of muscle movements, died. Hours later, doctors confirmed she now has Cerebral Palsy (CP). To be more specific, she is an a-spastic quadriplegic, which means her muscles are always slightly contracted, and she is not able to walk correctly because of it. Some CP does not affect speech or mental capacity. Luckily for Aunt Dori, it affected neither. As a child, I never understood why she was different than my other aunts, besides the fact she was in a wheelchair. I thought her twenty-four hour care takers had been just other friends coming to visit and sleep…
During my high school years, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was horrible news to hear, especially since my mother has been such an influential figure in my life. In addition to this, my father was depressed during this time because of his unemployment and my mother’s cancer diagnosis. My mother was the only source of income for our family, so she went to work throughout her the pain from her chemotherapy. I was distraught from my mother’s illness, but I was expected to take on more household responsibilities so that my mother could rest when she got home from work. I was expected to help shop, clean, and take care of my younger sister by helping her with her homework. These responsibilities in addition to keeping up with my school work made this situation an extremely stressful time for me.…
Since I was young, my parents have always taught my sister and I the value of giving your time to help others. When my mom had asked if we would be interested in being volunteers for Carly’s Crossing ten years ago, I would have never guessed the impact I could make not just for pediatric cancer patients and their families at Roswell Park, but the impact volunteering had on myself. Looking back, I have now realized that Carly’s Crossing has helped me to build character.…
In high school, I joined Zonta Club to be involved with school and community. Zonta Club gave me an opportunity to reach out to people that had helped others and inspired other students to do the same. One of the unforgettable moments was when I volunteered in a fundraiser to help Alzheimer's disease. It was an event, called Rock-a-Thon, where kids and adults were together to raise awareness those who had the disease. Everyone was participating in the activities that were available in the event. There were games that both kids and elders could play with. They showed stories about the importance of being aware and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. The event had shaped my views on giving back to the community. Service was not only about giving back, but it is also about learning from others. The joy that the people had even when there was a sickness in their life was incredible. It made me realize how I was fortunate to be living a life without the disease. The fundraiser had made me learn about the people in my town and the obstacles that had to endure and were still enduring. The event had impact the involvement and the appreciation I have over the…
I want to major in nursing and my intention is to become a certified oncology pediatric nurse in the future. An oncology nurse deals with working with patients who have been diagnosed with cancer. Yes, it is something that can be very painful to go through at times, but I think more on the positive side such as helping them with their needs and just making sure they feel comfortable. I want to be able to be that person along their side through all their hard moments and be able to provide some sort of happiness so that they won’t always have to remember about the situation that they are going through. Personally, I decided to focus on specifically becoming an oncology nurse because my grandpa is currently fighting cancer himself and even though…

It takes special doctors and nurses working together to provide the best care possible to save these children’s lives. Pediatric Oncologist specialize in all types of cancer in children and young adults. A pediatric oncologist must explain the diagnosis and stage of the cancer with the patient. As well as, discussing all the treatment options and recommendations from the oncologist. Pediatric oncologist’s work on a team of doctors, nurses, social workers, pathologists, and pediatricians to help provide the best pain relieving techniques. Pediatric Oncology is a broad topic, therefore, writing essays to discuss current issues and proposals for helping develop the cure for the most common cancers that affect children will be very beneficial to not only my future career, but interesting and enlightening…
I didn’t know what to expect and honestly I didn’t expect what I got. It was two nights before we were going to leave to go home. The trip had been amazing and very unexpected. We went to a church service at Agora ministries church, located in a pretty rough part of San Antonio, after a really long day at the apartment complex we worked at. That day we held a sports camp for all of the kids that lived in that apartment complex and it was really fun! We played kickball, soccer, football, water balloons, and sang songs with all of the kids! That night, my team performed a human video. Human video are kind of like plays except with music and there normally isn’t any talking. The room wasn’t very large, but it was big enough to fit all 2-3 hundred kids and leaders (from different churches across the states). It was a dark room, but very colorful and I remember that it had a disco ball at the center of it. For the human video we were supposed to denim jeans and black T-shirts with our shirts tucked (which was very uncomfortable with me ). The human video was about how much God loves us and how He died on the cross to save this man who raped women. It showed Jesus dying on the cross and inviting that man into his family even though he…
It was about more than decade ago; I was abroad in third world country, staying in a Hotel. My friend was also staying in that hotel. One morning, he did not show up for breakfast, when I went to check on him he was laying in his bed looking very weak. Even though, I had no medical knowledge at that time, but the sight of my friend vomiting struck me with empathy. I stayed with him brewing some chamomile tea and assisting him until he began to feel better. he finally regained his strength and told his friends and family of how much of help I was to him. Although, I have pursued other careers, it was at this time that I realized my passion for caring others.…
49 kids in the United States will be diagnosed with a form of childhood cancer today. Just like Martin Luther King Jr had a dream for Americans to approach racial equality, I have a dream of a world free of childhood cancer. Pediatric cancer has become a tremendous issue, claiming the lives of more, and more, innocent children daily. Through awareness, funding, and research my dream can become a reality.…
To begin, I’ve never had cancer, but cancer has impacted my life in a huge way. Cancer Free Kids is a non profit organization, that raises money through many different large projects for Pediatric Cancer Research. Cancer Free Kids has held 97 projects raising over 3 million dollars for Pediatric Cancer Research. I got involved with Cancer Free Kids during a project held every year for the past 4 years called Night 4 The Fight. We raised 200,000 dollars that night alone.…

“When cancer strikes a spouse, the effects of the disease reach far beyond the body of the sick person” (Relationship Changes 1). Many families in America go through the vicious and life changing journey of cancer in their household. This journey changes the lives of these people and their perspective on life. During this journey many families have to adjust to their new situations. Children might need to take care of parents, spouses may have to get a second job, and kids will have to take up extra duties around the house. The effects of cancer on a family can be very life changing and effect the family right from the diagnosis all the way up to the death of that family member.…
As we found out that next morning, our primary goal was to paint rooms in an abandoned hospital that was being converted into housing for the homeless. What it looked like was exactly what you would expect of an abandoned hospital. Every room on the floor was the same—dirty and concrete. The people there were anything but this description. We were welcomed with open arms as we ate our meals with others in the soup kitchen as they asked us about our lives and thanked us for coming so far to help. As everyone ate together they joyfully asked each other how their day was, thankful for the opportunity…
Cancer, while one of the biggest fears in many people’s minds, is excessively prevalent today especially in a world where it seems as if everything is or could possibly be a carcinogen. Though knowledge is rather limited when it comes to the causes of cancer and why it appears in some people but not others, it is known that “cancer occurs when a cell is genetically altered and unable to control its own growth and proliferation” (MacDonald, 2010, p. 176). Unfortunately no one, including children and adolescents, is immune to cancer so it is not uncommon to see children as young as newborns to as old as late teens develop cancer (MacDonald, 2010). While there are is not a set list of childhood cancers versus adulthood cancers, there are types of cancer that are more prevalent in children than adults and also types of cancer that are more prevalent in either young children or adolescents (MacDonald, 2010). One thing is for certain; when a child is diagnosed with cancer it affects the family unit as a whole and “life is never the same” (Mckenzie & Curle, 2012, p.648).…
I chose to research childhood Leukemia because it is the most common cancer in children and teens, and accounts for almost 1 out of 3 cancers. Just the fact that it could take a life, a child’s life, so easily made me want to learn more about this deadly cancer.…
