One of the great inventions that influence our mind is the map. After it was invented, the way people understood where they were going was purely through their sensually perception, what they saw around them. When the map was invented, it changed the way people think, it brought us a more general abstract mind. We began to pay more attention to the abstract pattern lay behind what we saw and what we heard. Another example which is most recently is the invention of the mechanical clock. Before the clock came out, people perception of time was purely as a natural flow. When you have the clock, that flow is broken down into pieces: hour, minute, second… We began to pay more attention to measuring thing precisely. Therefore, whenever a new intellectual technology come along, it will change the way we obtain information, looking at the world, communicate with each other and dramatically change the way we think. Printing press is also one of the revolusionaly development. It made the form of printed writing popular, more people wanted to sit down and read books. It changed them to be more intensive thinker. When I first picked up this book I didn’t know any downside any dark side that the most vital and transformative technology might have. I was just enjoying the benefit of multi-tasking, the full access of information that internet provides. I spend less time reading book and more time on the web, communicate with each other, exchange information. I didn’t question myself why I’m getting so many distractions nowadays. I couldn’t concentrate on one subject for a long period of time. I always get interrupted by something such as emails, facebook, and iphone internet connecting devices. After reading the book, I finally understand what cause those distractions. People who continue to ignore the culture critics and distractions, people who think being exposed to information is what making you smart will lose some of the think they take for granted today such as the ability to reading long book, concentration. I think Carr right about that. He is also right about how distractions affect my ability to transfer information from my short term memory to long term memory. Sometime I often forget what I planned to do about five or ten minute ago because I have so many things to pay attention too. These tiny discrete distractions nowadays have a negative impact on our mind loosen our ability to do things properly like we used to do.
