Teeth
Gavin McCarthy I am glad I live in 2014 because there is dentistry and orthodontics. I go to the dentist two times a year to get my teeth cleaned. I also used to go to the orthodontist once a month for my braces, until I got them off. I thought it was terrible but it was worth it.
Back in 10 A.D. Persians used ashes of goat hooves to clean their teeth. It made their gums bleed and caused infections. The Persians made goat hooves into ash and mixed it with water to make a paste. It may have caused infection because they thought they weren’t brushing enough, so they scrubbed until the gums bleed.
In Europe during the1400s there was only one boar bristle tooth brush per family. Tooth brushes were a delicacy, so only one per family. If dad or anyone else had a cavity it would spread to anyone in the family. I believe that more sicknesses were spread because of this. They were such a delicacy because they were expensive. They were so expensive that not every family had a tooth brush.
In 1700s, like everyone else, George Washington had rotten teeth so he got his teeth yanked out. George Washington was twenty when his teeth were pulled. He had his teeth pulled out by his barber without pain killers. Sometimes when you had a cavity filled, you felt it really hurt. The pain killers help the most when getting teeth pulled.
In conclusion I am glad that I live in 2014. The things that the people had to go through, like getting teeth pulled and brushing their teeth with goat hooves. I am the most glad that I live in 2014 because there are new inventions every day. Dentistry is growing and improving every day. People will look back at what we did and think it’s weird.

In the articles “The Totally Gruesome, Totally Fascinating History of teeth” and “Where are all the Dentists?” both by Kristin lewis, it talks about how there are lots of challenges that people faced with dentistry over time. There are lots of small problems, but there are also lots of big problems, one that it talks about in the article is that back in the day, before we had good dental work, people would get there teeth pulled without anesthetics. In the article it says ”Tough cowboys of the American West would weep openly as their diseased teeth were yanked out with pliers--often with little more than a few gulps of whiskey to dull the searing pain,” (Lewis 14). This shows that people back in the day were willing to get there teeth pulled and go through the pain so they don't get an infection.…

Dental (silver) amalgam has been used in various dental applications for more than a century. In fact, the first written record of amalgam being used in dental applications is 1528 .Yet, it is still a very commonly used material today. Amalgam was first made by melting down Spanish or Mexican coins and mixing them with mercury . When it cooled and settled into the cavity, it actually turned black. Bell then evolved this rudimentary procedure into a more controlled alloy in 1819. The substance created a massive wealth for the dental surgeons who promoted its use. However, the substance was actually overused, and in 1845 a convention of dental surgeons agreed to stop its use altogether. They believe that the substance was ineffective, but in actuality it was just overused in situations that it was not designed for. In 1850 it was realized that the substance was irreplaceable and was allowed back…

It is February 1787, a very chilly afternoon in Mount Vernon, Virginia. George Washington was outside his cabin chopping cherry trees with his hatchet, as a hobby. He took the wood and cherries home to his wife and two adopted kids. Sadly, he couldn't fully enjoy the cherries as any person would because he had dentures. His dentures weren't made of wood, as the popular rumor believed. They were instead more uncomfortable than wood. They were made of cow's teeth, human teeth, and elephant ivory set in a lead base with springs so he could open and close his mouth. The dentures fitted poorly and distorted the shape of his mouth. Being land rich, he used the wood for warmth and to build his own city in Pennsylvania, which he named Cherry Hill.…

Although Washington was undoubtedly ambitious, he pursued his goals humbly and with quiet confidence in his abilities as a leader.(This day in History February 22 1732)" Washington had many friends. Washington had a good side and a bad side; if someone got on his bad side they would stay there for quite some time because he was known for holding grudges. He is also known for wooden teeth but that is all a myth, Washington had one tooth by the time he was president he wore dentures and he had many sets that were very painful to him, they were often made from hippo or cow…

Identifying any person by teeth or remains of his teeth is not a new technique. It goes back to the time of Nero around 66 A.D. According to one legend, Agrippina, Nero's mother ordered her soldiers to kill her rival Lollia Paulina who was in competition with her to be the wife of Emperor Claudius. They were instructed to bring back the head of Lollia Paulina as a proof of her death. But when the soldiers brought back the head, Agrippina was unable to identify the head positively as it was unidentifiable. Then she remembered the unique features of the Lollia Paulina discoloured front tooth and examined the tooth present in the head which the soldiers brought back as a proof. After seeing the discoloured front tooth it was confirmed that the…

Ancient Romans also would make gold teeth for teeth cosmetic, but then would pull the gold teeth out when someone passed away, because it was a rule in their culture. Romans made many of their own pain medication for the teeth, they would use worms, crow and brains of frogs. The most popular medication was call opium, which they used if they had to pull a tooth out or doing anything painful in the mouth. Since dentist position did not exist back then and there needed to be a tooth pulled or removed that position was turned over to a barber. The barbers would use leeches if they need to do a tooth extraction, they would also remove loose teeth, rotten teeth and decayed teeth, since there was no formal medication for helping those things from happening.…

George Washington (1st President, 1789-1797) started losing his permanent teeth at age 22 and had only one tooth by the time he was president. He used dental powder daily, but was constantly plagued with toothaches and dental problems. Some historians think this may have been caused by the medical remedies used to treat his malaria or small pox. Washington had false teeth made from many different materials, including an elephant tusk and a hippopotamus bone. He was embarrassed by his teeth, and most portraits show him with his mouth closed, looking serious. He would not take his false teeth out at the dinner table, which was the custom at that time. Washington did his best to…

The usual people are outside on their morning cigarette break as they say to me in broken English, “ah back again for more teeth! Take them all. I want new ones”. I smile and say good morning, looking for my participant. After finding Carlos, my survey participant for the day, we head over to the sunroom to begin the survey on his perceptions on oral health, his hygienic routines, general health, and demographic information. What Carlos told me, and many other participants told me this summer, only offered a small window into what was going on with dental care and what was being done to provide services to those who cannot access it effectively? Was their barred access due to their language, ethnicity, income, or something else entirely? My father, a dental hygienist and educator at UConn Health, informed me about the correlation of dental care and overall health, and this summer I saw what he meant in full force. I saw many who had poor dental care combined with high cholesterol/blood pressure, diabetes, mental disorder, cancer, and at least one type of heart procedure done to them. Nutrition and education seemed to be a theme that I observed as well. Simply doing surveys, however, did not allow me to paint a full…
