Biome Description/ Definition: Temperate grassland covers large areas of the interior of continents, where there is moderate rainfall, but still too little for trees to grow (textbook).
Climate and Location: The weather in the temperate grasslands includes hot summers and cold winters(Defender). Summers can reach up over 100 degree fahrenheit, and the winters can drop to 40 degree below 0 fahrenheit. Year round, the grasslands have about 10-35 inches of rain which mostly occur in the summers and spring(Defender). There is often snow in the grasslands which keeps the soil moist. During the dry season, wildfires are common in the grasslands. Temperate grasslands are located north of the Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degrees …show more content…
But if there was a nearby water source such as a river, trees such as cottonwoods, oaks and willows could grow there as well(Defender). Grasses such as purple needle grass, blue grama, buffalo grass, and galleta and flowers such asters, blazing stars, cone flowers, goldenrod, sunflowers, clovers, psoraleas, and wild indigo all have the ability to turn brown and die off in the droughts but then grow back in the rainy seasons (Defender).

There are also carnivores such as wolves, coyotes, swift foxes, badgers and black-footed ferrets (Defender of Wildlife). The rulers of the grasslands skies would include grouses, meadowlarks, quails, sparrows, hawks and owls (Defender of …show more content…
Overgrazing by livestock and plowing are the two main threats to temperate grasslands because the lands that were once completed wild are turn into farmlands to grow crops and live stocks for humans. Not to mention the animals such as prairie dogs and bisons are killed due to destruction of habitat and wildlife eradication (Defender). Urbanization is also a threat since it turns the grasslands into cities. With people living in the grasslands than the wild fires would be contained which was essential to the temperate
