Tensions Leading To The Outbreak Of The Civil War

In the years before 1861, the East of the United States of America split into two completely different nations: the Union in the North, and the Confederacy in the South. Between the two grew tensions on multiple issues such as culture and policy but the main difference was their relation to slavery. These tensions accumulated to finally result on the start of the Civil War on April 12, 1861 when the Confederacy attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The light will be shed on the importance of the cotton economy in the outbreak of this bloody war. These cities appealed to a lot of people, mostly immigrants from Europe, as they were a source of labor but also education for children and art. This immigration and abundance of job opportunities explains why the Northern states were three times more populated than the Southern with about twenty two million people. However, the cities also had some inconvenient such as a fast spreading of diseases, a high crime rate or a constant threat of fire as the factories were using coal and steam as energies. On the other hand, the Southern states were less industrialized and modern. The population of the South was at a third composed of slaves, the others were white free people. These white people had, for a majority, no slaves but there were still seventeen per cent of them who had some (for the most one to nine slaves). As the slaves lived in barracks, the wealthy planters lived in beautiful antebellum mansions and had big plantations. There was not a lot of employment as most of the job was done by slaves so the southern states were not a good place for immigration.
