Teotihuacan: {Nahutl: “The City Of The God’s”}
Established around 100BC and lasting until its fall around 750BC, Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities in the ancient world.
Teotihuacan was a hand-built, pre Columbian, Mesoamerican city built more than a thousand years before the arrival of the Nahutl-speaking Aztec in Central Mexico. Teotihuacan is said to be situated fewer than 50 kilometers (approx. 30 miles) northeast of Mexico City, in the Sub Valley of the Valley of Mexico.
The early history of Teotihuacan is engulfed in mystery, very little is known about its ancient builders, exact religious beliefs or even their language/s. It is believed that people first moved to the area around 500BC and the city is thought to have been established around 100BC with an estimated population of 125,000 to 200,000 by 500AD being the dominant civilization of a large area.
Teotihuacan owed a lot of its growth to trade. It has been said to be the center for the Mesoamerican trade in Obsidian and benefited from its proximity to major trade routes running from the Valley of Mexico to Veracruz and Monte Alban. Teotihuacan meaning “The City Of The God’s”, reflects the Aztec belief that the God’s created the universe at the place. While there is little evidence of daily religious activities, it is clear that the God’s played a crucial role in the lives of the Teotihuacano’s and that an essential part of the process of creating a new public building was to ask for the God’s blessing on that process.
