Stephen Gass, TC Chief of Police said “The U.S. Department of Education initiated a federal mandate that all institutions of higher education shall implement a system of delivering crucial and critical information to all having a vested interest in what occurs on a college campus.”
The RAVE system is beneficial in that students can receive important information in a timely manner. The text messages are easiest to receive because they simply show up on the phone without having to really check anything, and students check texts more frequently.
“We have chosen RAVE to be an OPT-OUT system meaning all students are automatically registered at the time they sign up for classes”, said TC’s Director of Public Safety, Jeff Cottingham. …show more content…
For those that still do not have the alerts, they can go to the TC Department of Public Safety webpage and click on the link below the “Sign up for Rave” section.
Michael W. Dumdei, Chief Information Officer said, “Important events, such as school closings or delayed starts, are posted on the TC web site and for things like that it is probably the second best source of
information.”
To add emails to cell phones, students can go to the “How To” documents on the TC Help Desk site. Students with any questions can visit the Information Technology help desk staff.
The RAVE alerts are not just beneficial in weather cases, but are important in ensuring the safety of the students and faculty in the event of crime as well.
During summer 2014, a crime occurred in the surrounding area and the suspect was on foot heading toward campus. The RAVE system alerted students and faculty to stay on campus and the suspect was found at the campus apartments.
On September 11, the school received a bomb threat and the RAVE alerts allowed students to evacuate campus and warned students who had not yet arrived to not come at that time.
