Negative Effects of Texting Texting negatively affects teen literacy because it promotes bad grammar and can encourage teens to continue using bad grammar and also poor spelling. Students don't see the effect texting has on their writing skills, and the more they use it the more you get used to writing in textism form. Parents see the slang being used, but they don't do much about it. Phone bills show that teens usually send and receive about 1,800 text messages if not more per month. When students turn in English papers such as essays, stories, etc there is a lot of slang and textisms used. Most teachers get used to it and some dislike grading papers with textisms being used. “In fact, 64 percent of students in the study reported inadvertently using a form of shorthand native to texting or social networking. But, the problem does not end there, as Sakowicz acknowledges that younger teachers see the slang but “let it go” (“How Slang Effects Students”). If you don't report the mistakes or the problem it won't ever get fixed and they’ll continue turning in papers in the wrong format …show more content…
“Texting has different kinds of effects on literacy depending on its usage” (Alhosani). Texting can be used different ways and it's good to explore new languages but cyber slang should not used in school. “Until the time that concrete results are acquired to suggest that texting has deleterious effects, it may be wise to encourage students to lessen their use of textisms, and to instead use proper grammar and spelling while they are using textisms as a form of communication” (Campbell). Encouraging students to use less cyber slang and textisms could really help the students with using less textisms. Some teachers may let the textism go because they tell the student repeatedly over and over again and they will get tired of the bad grammar papers eventually and let your mistakes

    Cullington points out some of the arguments that were made by those who believe that texting has detrimental affects on its writers.
